Experiment 6
BCD-to-Decimal Decoder
AIM:
To design and realize BCD to decimal decoder using gates.
COMPONENTSANDEQUIPMENT’SREQUIRED:
IC 7421 and IC Trainer Kit.
THEORY:
The process of taking some type of code and determining what it represents in terms of
a recognizable number or character is called decoding. A decoder is a combinational logic
circuit that performs the decoding function, and produce an output that indicates the
(meaning) of the input code.
The BCD decoder converts each BCD code (8421) into one of ten possible decimal
digit indications. It is typically referred to as a 1 of 10 or 4 to 10 lines decoder. It has 4-
input lines and 10 output lines and only one output line is active at a time. 6 of the 16 input
combinations are invalid and for input combinations that are invalid for BCD none of the
outputs will be activated.
PROCEDURE:
1. Test all components using digital IC tester.
2. Setup the BCD-to decimal decoder using gates and verify the outputs.
