Computing Project – Grade 8

Create a presentation about computer networks. The total slides are 10.

Notes:

1. This presentation structure should provide a comprehensive overview of

computer networks within the allotted 10 slides. Each slide should be visually
engaging with appropriate images, diagrams, and bullet points to convey
information effectively.
2. The teacher has to provide a folder with all the appropriate images, diagrams.
3. Each slide has one image.

Use Microsoft PowerPoint inside the lab and guide students to type the
following below:
The project title (Exploring Computer Networks: A Comprehensive
Overview)

Slide 1: Introduction

 A computer network is a system of connected devices that share

resources and information.
 Networks are vital for communication, collaboration, and resource
sharing.
 This presentation will cover different types of networks, their
components, and their importance.

Slide 2: Types of Computer Networks

 LAN: Small-scale networks like those in homes, offices, or schools.

 WAN: Large-scale networks connecting multiple LANs across cities
or countries.
 MAN: Intermediate-scale networks covering a city or metropolitan
area.
 PAN: Personal networks connecting devices within a short range,
like Bluetooth.
 WLAN: Wireless networks that allow devices to connect without
physical cables.

Slide 3: Network Topologies

 Bus: Devices share a single communication line.

 Star: Devices connect to a central hub or switch.
 Ring: Devices are connected in a circular chain.
Cambridge International School (CIS)

 Mesh: Devices connect to each other directly, providing redundancy.

 Hybrid: Combination of different topologies.

Slide 4: Network Devices

 Routers: Direct traffic between different networks.

 Switches: Connect devices within a network and manage data
traffic.
 Hubs: Basic devices that broadcast data to connected devices.
 Modems: Convert digital signals to analog for transmission over
communication lines.
 Access Points: Allow wireless devices to connect to a wired network.

Slide 5: Network Protocols

 TCP/IP: Standard protocol for internet communication.

 HTTP: Protocol for transferring web pages.
 FTP: Protocol for transferring files between computers.
 SMTP: Protocol for sending email messages.
 DNS: Converts domain names to IP addresses.

Slide 6: Network Security

 Essential for protecting data and network integrity.

 Common threats include malware, phishing, and unauthorized
access.
 Security measures include firewalls, encryption, and regular
updates.

Slide 7: Network Administration

 Network administrators manage and maintain network

infrastructure.
 Tools like monitoring software and configuration management aid in
administration.
 Best practices include regular backups and documentation.

Slide 8: Emerging Trends in Networking

 IoT: Interconnected devices for smart applications.

 5G: Next-gen mobile networks with faster speeds.
 SDN: Software-based network management.
 Cloud networking: Network services delivered via the cloud.

Slide 9: Case Studies

 Examples of successful network implementations like Google's data

centers.
Cambridge International School (CIS)

 Challenges such as scalability and security, with solutions and

lessons learned.

Slide 10: Conclusion

 Recap of key points covered in the presentation.

 Emphasize the importance of understanding networks in today's
world.
 Mention future advancements and the need for ongoing learning.

Submission Notes:

 The deadline is the 2nd of May, 2024.

 You can use the computing lab during the period to finish your project, or it is better
to prepare it at home.
 Send the project by e-mail to ( ) or submit it if it is done inside the computing lab.
