2.2.7 Measure/Annotation

Click or open the measuring toolbar. The measuring tool bar is shown in
the right drawing.
The system provides a lot of measuring and
annotation auxiliary tools, including Length,
Arrow, Rectangle, Round Rect, Polygon, Ellipse,
Text, and angle, etc., and these tools are used to
measure length, angle, area, mean value, mean
square deviation, etc.

Before introducing these tools, let us clarify the following aspects:

1) A Few Definitions
● Key point:
Each object has a few key points, which means the object may be changed through or
by operating the points. For example, a rectangle tool has 8 key points (see the
drawing below), moving the mouse to the key point and pressing and dragging it will
change the size of the object, and moving the mouse to the rectangular box and
dragging it will move this object.

● Measuring information:
It may be seen from the right drawing that the box is
attached with measuring result information, as well as
a dotted line connecting to the rectangular box, and all
objects having measuring results are attached with
their own measuring information. When an object
moves, the measuring information will move with it.
The measuring information may also be moved by
dragging it with the mouse. Each object and its
measuring information are connected through a dotted
line, and user may also set so that the dotted line is
invisible.

● Current state:
Suppose the system is in “Rectangle” state, this state will remain unchanged before it
is changed to any other state, or in other words, user may draw many rectangular
boxes continuously. If it is necessary to modify or move the drawn object, it shall be
switched to “Select” state.
By clicking left key of the mouse (pressing and releasing it immediately), the object
may be switched to “Select” state.

● Context menu:
When pressing right key of the mouse over the object, the context menu will pop up,
and this menu may bring much convenience if user may use it skillfully.

2) Detailed Functions:
a. Length
It may be used to measure the length.

Application method: press left key of the mouse and

move it, a line will appear following the mouse, and
release the mouse to complete the measuring.

Other tools (Arrow, Rectangle, Round Rect, Polygon,

Ellipse, Angle) may all be used in the same method.

The measuring results are in mm. If the image is not

attached with measuring information, such as an
image captured from a video, the states of this object
may be seen through measuring scale provided by
the system by double-clicking the object or using
“Attributes” in the menu. Please note the lowest item,
which indicates the actual length of the line. The
image without attached measuring information is
defaulted as 0, as shown in the right drawing, the
actual pixel 205 stands for 96mm. user may input a new value, and after pressing OK,
the system will measure the length or area according to the input value.

b. Rectangle
It is used to measure the area and mean value, etc. of a rectangle.
It is used in similar method to Length, which will not be explained any more, and
here we will introduce what each element in measuring information means:
● Ar
It stands for area in mm2. If no measuring information is attached, it will indicate
points.
● Av
It stands for average density. In CT image, it indicates CT value.
● SD
It stands for mean square deviation.
When double-clicking the object or using “Attributes” in the menu, a histogram will
pop up as below:

This window indicates the density distribution in this rectangular area.

In which, the horizontal coordinate indicates the density value (CT value), and the
vertical coordinate indicates the number of density points.
The densities and quantities of the most and fewest points are shown at the lower part
of the window.
All objects with their areas able to be measured, such as round rectangle, polygon,
and ellipse, may be displayed in histogram pattern, and they will not be explained any
more for their meanings are similar.

c. Ellipse
It is used to measure the area and average value of a square, whose application
method is similar to Length.
d. Round Rectangle
It is used to measure the area and average value of a round rectangular area.

This tool is almost the same as Rectangle, but it may be used to draw a rounded
rectangle. It has one more key point than Rectangle (see the right drawing), and
dragging this key point may change the arc of the round corner.

e. Polygon (arbitrary shape)

It is used to measure the area and average value, etc. of an irregular area.
This tool may be used in two methods:

● Polygon:
At the first point, click left key of the mouse (press and release immediately), and
move the mouse to the second point and click another time. Repeat this process till the
whole interest area is drawn, and finally double-click the left key to complete.

● Arbitrary shape:

This function is used like a “painting brush”. Press left key of the mouse (keep
holding), and the area the mouse passes will all be drawn, and finally double-click the
left key to complete.

f. Arrow
It is used to make an arrow-shape mark..
It is used in similar method to Length. As the arrow is just a mark, it is not attached
with measuring information.

g. Angle
It is used to measure an angle.
Application method: click the mouse at the first point of one line of an angle, and
click it another time to make it as the vertex the angle, and finally click to determine
the second line.
The measuring result is in degree.

h. Text
It is used for text labeling.
Application method: click left key of the mouse where labeling is necessary, and then
input the labeling content. After finishing the input, click “OK ”. As no length
limitation is set to the text length, a very long text may be input.

Double-click the text when it needs modifying.

i. Other label management functions
Delete: to delete the label
Delete all: before deleting, the system will give a confirm message, and all will be
deleted after the message is confirmed.
Attributes: it is used to indicate the nature of the current label, which varies with the
current object.
Configuration: it may be used to modify the appearance effect of the label, such as
colors, line types and line widths when it is selected and not selected, and it may also
be modified through “Setup” item in the menu.

2.2.8 Clip

It is used to clip the image. After clicking CLIP, press left key of the
mouse in the image area and drag the mouse, and the drawn rectangle will be the
region to be clipped. See the drawing below.
Clipping area

2.2.9 Lens

It is used to view an interest part of an image at self-adapting window

width and window level value.
After this function is implemented, the interface below may be popped up:
After selecting “Organization lens”, a rectangle will be drawn in the image as required,
and the software will display the image at different window width and window level
value according to the position of the rectangle. This rectangle may also be dragged
on the image.
2.2.10 Overlay

It is used to display or hide the text messages on the image, such as name
and sex, etc..
