Multivariable Calculus (Semester 2 – 2024/25)

Problem Sheet 1 – Functions of Multiple Variables

1 Partial derivatives
Compute all first- and second-order partial derivatives of the following functions. In each case verify that
that the mixed partial derivatives are equal.

(i) f (x, y) = x2 + x4 y 2 + y 4

(ii) f (x, y) = xy , for x > 0

(iii) f (x, y) = yexy + x + y

2 Using Clairaut’s theorem

sin(y)
Let f (x, y) = x2 y 2 + y 2 +1
.
∂f ∂2f
(i) Calculate ∂y
, and hence calculate ∂x∂y
.
∂f ∂2f
(ii) Calculate ∂x
, and hence calculate ∂y∂x
. Compare with Part (i) and discuss.

3 Chain rule
Using the chain rule:
df
(i) find du
when f (x, y) = xe−y , x = 1 + au and y = bu3 .
∂f ∂f
(ii) find ∂u
and ∂v
when f (x, y) = x/y, x = u + v, and y = u2 − v 2 .

4 Gradient
Find the gradients of the following functions at the specified points.

(i) f (x, y) = cos x sin y at the point π4 , π3 .

(ii) f (x, y, z) = x2 y + xz at the point (1, 2, −1).
