Course Objectives:

1. Understanding and having a basic idea about design process.


2. Abilities of developing equations pertaining to the design of machine elements.
3. Knowledge of different materials and their properties for designing the components of machines.

Course Outcomes:

1. Ability to understand basic design methodology.


2. Apply the knowledge of Mathematics, Science and Engineering for designing machine part.
3. Ability to select and design the temporary and permanent fasteners.
4. Ability to select and design the shaft under various loading conditions.

Syllabus:

Unit 1 : Introduction, type of design, types of loadings, design stress and factor of safety.

Unit 2 : Failure resulting from static load, design for variable loading, design for fatigue, S-N diagrams, Endurance limit,
cumulative fatigue damage.

Unit 3 : Design of threaded fasteners, bolted joints including eccentrically loaded joints, Riveted and welded joints.

Unit 4 : Design of Solid and Hollow shaft under bending, torsional and thrust load. Design of Keys.

Course Objectives:
1. Student should be able to analyse the variables of metal casting processes to produce
engineering components and consequently employ the process.
2. Student should be capable to evaluate the parameters in metal joining/welding
techniques of manufacturing engineering components and adopt the process.
3. Student should gain knowledge and able to estimate the parameters which affect the
manufacture of engineering components through metal forming techniques and
consequently implement them while manufacturing.
4. Student should have the ability to design and measure the dimensions of a component
according to the measurement standards.
Course Outcomes (COs):
1. Analyse the variables of metal casting processes to produce engineering components
and consequently employ the process.
2. Evaluate the parameters in metal joining/welding techniques of manufacturing
engineering components and adopt the process.
3. Estimate the parameters which affect the manufacture of engineering components
through metal forming techniques and consequently implement them while
manufacturing.
4. Execute the design and measure the dimensions according to the standard
measurement methods.
Syllabus:
Unit – I: Metal casting:
Sand casting, design and types of patterns, moulds and cores, solidification and cooling, riser
and gating design. Casting processes, Casting defects.
Unit – II: Metal Joining:
Welding and its classification, Principles of welding, Fusion and non-fusion welding
processes, metallurgy of welding, welding defects, testing of welded joints. Brazing,
Soldering and adhesive bonding.
Unit – III: Metal Forming:
Plastic deformation and yield criteria; fundamentals of hot and cold working processes; load
estimation for bulk (forging, rolling, extrusion, drawing) and sheet metal (shearing, deep
drawing, bending) forming processes; principles of powder metallurgy.

Unit – IV: Metrology and Inspection:


Limits, fits and tolerances; gauge design; linear and angular measurements; comparators;
interferometry; form and finish measurement; surface integrity, concepts of coordinate
measuring machine (CMM).
