Representation of Functions
Representation of Functions
For each question, substitute each of the values into the function
machine and write down what you get as outputs
4(x+5)-1
x 3x 3x + 8 x x+5 4(x+5) 4(x+5)-1
2
f(x) = 5x + 7
Replace ‘x’ with ‘7’
f(7) = 5(7) + 7
Calculate
f(7) = 42
Functions
• Now we can look at some questions on functions
f(x) = 8x - 7
We need to find the value of x that makes this equal to 45
à Replace f(x) with 45
45 = 8x - 7
Add 7
So an input of 6.5 will
52 = 8x give an output of 45!
Divide by 8
Make sure you always think about the notation
6.5 = x so you know what you’re being asked to do!!
Inverse Functions (1)
• Today we will be looking at Inverse Functions
𝑓 𝑥 =𝑥+7 𝑔 𝑥 = 3𝑥
As a ‘function machine’, f(x) As a ‘function machine’, g(x)
would look like this would look like this
𝑓 !" 𝑥 = 𝑥 − 7 𝑥
𝑔!" 𝑥 =
3
f-1(x) means ‘the inverse
function of f(x) g-1(x) means ‘the inverse
function of g(x)
Inverse Functions (1)
For simple functions, you can use the idea of a ‘function machine’
𝑥+4 𝑔 𝑥 = 5(𝑥 + 1)
𝑓 𝑥 =
2
As a ‘function machine’, f(x) As a ‘function machine’, g(x)
would look like this would look like this
𝑥
𝑓 !" 𝑥 = 2𝑥 − 4 𝑔!" 𝑥 = −1

Plenary
Given the function:
𝑓 𝑥 = 6𝑥 − 10
a) Find the value of x for which f(x) = f-1(x) b) Find the value of f-1f(8)
𝑓 𝑥 = 6𝑥 − 10 (x by 6 then -10)
