Lab Report 14

The lab report details an experiment to design and implement AND, OR, NOT, and EX-OR logic gates using a breadboard and specific ICs. The procedure includes setting up the breadboard, connecting the ICs, implementing the gates, and testing their outputs against truth tables. The results confirmed that the outputs matched expected values, with LEDs indicating the states correctly.

AIM:
To Design And Implement AND, OR & NOT Logic
Gate Using Breadboard

Theory:
Logic gates are the building blocks of digital circuits. Each
gate performs a specific logical function based on its
input and generates an output. The verification of logic
gates involves confirming that the output matches the
expected results defined in their truth tables.
1. AND Gate (IC 7408): Produces a HIGH output only
when all inputs are HIGH.
2. OR Gate (IC 7432): Produces a HIGH output if at
least one input is HIGH.
3. NOT Gate (IC 7404): Produces the complement of
the input.
4. EX-OR Gate (IC 7486): Produces a HIGH output
when the inputs are different.

Components Required:
 Breadboard
 Connecting wires
 Logic Gate ICs:
o AND Gate: IC 7408
o OR Gate: IC 7432
o NOT Gate: IC 7404
o EX-OR Gate: IC 7486
 Power Supply (5V DC)
 LEDs (for output indication)
 Resistors (330 Ω)
 Multimeter (optional, for
troubleshooting)

Procedure: -

1. Set Up the Breadboard:
o Connect the power supply (+5V and
GND) to the power rails of the
breadboard.
o Verify connections using a multi-meter.
2. Connect the IC:
o Place the IC on the breadboard.
o Connect the VCC (pin 14) to the +5V rail
and GND (pin 7) to the ground rail of the
IC.
3. Implement the Gates:
o AND Gate (IC 7408):
 Connect two input pins to switches or
jump wires.
 Connect the output pin to an LED via
a 330 Ω resistor.

AND Gate:

4. Testing:
o Apply all possible combinations of inputs
(0 Observe the LED behaviors for each
input combination.
o Verify the output against the truth table
of each gate
o and 1) to each gate.

Result: -
Logic gates were tested on a breadboard using
their respective ICs: AND, OR, NOT, and EX-OR.
Outputs observed matched the truth tables.

Conclusion:
 The output for each gate matches the expected truth table
values.
 LEDs correctly indicate HIGH (ON) and LOW (OFF)
states for all input combinations.

 The circuits are verified to work as per the logic gate
definitions.

Precautions:
1. Ensure the IC is properly inserted into the breadboard
without bending the pins.
2. Verify the power supply voltage is 5V to avoid damaging
the ICs.
3. Use appropriate resistors to prevent LEDs from burning
out.
4. Double-check all connections before powering the circuit.
