1. When and where was Rabindranath Tagore was born ?

Ans: Rabindranath Tagore was born on may 8 1861, at Jorasanko in Kolkata

2. Why did Rabindranath Tagore want to open a school?

Ans: Tagore wanted to build an informal school for the poor farmers and boatmen because
they were illiterate and were influenced by superstitious beliefs. The school was built at
Shantiniketan, near Bolpur in west Bengal.

3. What is Rabindranath Tagore referring to in the statement “ where there would be a


different kind of learning experience”? what does he mean by ‘different, ?

Ans: Tagore is referring to the school he wanted to build at shantiniketan. By ‘different’ he


means not a school with formal learning. But one where studies would be under the open sky,
outdoors.

4. Where were William wordsworth and his brother sent after they were orphaned?

Ans: After they were orphaned , the brothers were sent to live with relatives and then to a
small free-of-cost grammar school at Hawkshead near Windermere.

5. Name William Wordsworth’s friend? What was the name of the book written by
them?

Ans: William Wordsworth’s friend was Samuel Taylor Coleridge. They wrote ‘Lyrical
Ballads’.

6. What made William Wordsworth a celebrity?

Ans: Wordsworth became England’s poet Laureate, which was a huge honour. He wrote
many beautiful poems, for which he enjoyed fame and recognition.

Ans: The rain is considered beautiful because it brings coolness in the atmosphere and
relief after the intense heat and dust of summer.

3. What is the rhyme scheme of the first eight lines in the poem?

Ans: The rhyme scheme is abba,accb

4. Why is the rain a blessing to the sick man?

Ans: The rain is a blessing to the sick man because the high fever and the heat was making
him hotter and sicker . The Rain changed the climate as well as made his body cool , reducing
his fever.

5. The poet describes a heavy shower in the poem. Pick out the words and phrases in the
poem which describes the heaviness of the rain ?

Ans: Some words and phrases are clatters, tramp of hoofs , gushes and struggles , pours
and roars.

Ans : The tribal school was situated in Sahyadri hills, a densely forested region

Ans: The headman is known as Thandappa. He is the senior most man of the
tribe and is considered to be the supreme power. He believes and follows the
practice taught to him in the childhood, everyone looks up to him and follows
him.

3. Why was the author impressed on hearing about the school ?

Ans: The author was impressed because the school had around fifty students,
and too teachers. The school was run by the state government , the children
came from far of places , the parents were poor, unschooled themselves , their
living condition was hard but still willing to educate their children.

4. What problems do you face on running the school ?

Ans: The author Sudha Murthy said these words to thandappa. The thandappa
said that coming to school during rains was difficult for the children. They
would get wet and the school clothes wouldn’t dry in the rainy season

Ans: The Thandappa gave the author a bottle of red juice , which is prepared
from a wild, red fruit , the juice was natural and pure.

1. Describe the way the boy is riding his bicycle

Ans: The boy had his feet lifted up in the air, his hands were steady,
firmly holding on to the handle bar so that he doesn’t fall, and he goes in
high speed but is alert and mindful of his movement. He is so fast that the
air goes by in a swirl of wind.

2. In the poem, what do the rider and the bird have in common ?

Ans: In the poem, the rider, rides on his bicycle downhill, the experience
for him is exciting and joyful. He feels he is flying like a bird. The boy
has removed his legs from the pedal, his hands are steady and he is going
in high speed , as if he is flying in the air.
3. Which lines in the poem express the joy of riding downhill most
effectively ?

Ans: Till the heart with a mighty lift makes the lungs laugh, the throat cry
“ O bird,see ; see, bird, I fly”.

4. What does the Poet feel about the bicycle rider who has to climb the hill?

Ans: The poet feels that the rider who climbs the steep hill will have to
do hard work, but will be rewarded at the end because he will get a
chance to come down joyously, just as if he has wings to fly like a bird.
