ESI DISPENSARY, ARAKKONAM

GENERAL GUIDELINES

The following safety rules must be followed at all


times in the laboratory. Many are safety issues as well.

1. When first entering a


science room, do not touch any
equipment, chemicals, or other
materials in the laboratory area
until you are instructed to do so.

2. Never eat or drink in the lab. Food may pick


up
toxic chemicals. Do not eat food, drink
beverages, or chew gum in the laboratory. Do not
use laboratory glassware as containers for food
or beverages.
3.Never taste any chemical. Some chemicals
are very corrosive and poisonous in
very small quantities.
4. Label all containers to identify
their contents.

5. Be prepared for your work in the


laboratory. Read all procedures
thoroughly before entering the laboratory. Never
fool around in the laboratory. Horseplay, practical
jokes, and pranks are dangerous and prohibited.

6. Dispose of all chemical waste


properly. Never mix chemicals in
sink drains. Sinks are to be used
only for water. Check for disposal
of chemicals and solutions.

7. Observe good housekeeping practices. Work


areas should be kept clean and tidy at all
times.
8. Keep the benchtop uncluttered. Only those
personal items pertinent to the lab work (lab
manual, etc.) are to be on the
benchtop at a students work station.
Book bags, coats, etc. are not to be
placed on the benchtop or on the
floor close to the lab benches. Place
all such items in the designated areas
near the entrance to the lab.

9. Keep hands away from face, eyes, mouth,


and body while using chemicals or lab
equipment. Wash your hands with soap and
water after performing all experiments.

10. Know the locations and operating


procedures of all safety equipment including:
first aid kit(s), fire extinguisher, fire blanket and
eye wash. Know where the fire alarm and the
exits are located.

11. If there is a fire drill during a laboratory


period, containers must be closed, and any .
CLOTHING
12. Any time chemicals, heat, or
glassware are used, lab technician
will wear safety goggles.
NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS RULE!
13. Goggles -Protect your eyes.
- Must be worn during ALL
labs
14. Gloves – Product your hands
- Some lab require gloves
15.Lab Coat - Product your skin
and clothes.
16. Shoes - Product your feet
- All lab require closed -toe
shoes

ACCIDENTS AND INJURIES

17. Report any accident (spill,


breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn,
etc.) to the Doctor. immediately, no
matter how trivial it seems. Do not
panic.
18. If a chemical should splash in your eye(s) or
on your skin, immediately flush with running
water for at least 20 minutes.
HANDLING CHEMICALS
19. All chemicals in the laboratory
are to be considered dangerous.
Avoid handling chemicals with
fingers. When making an
observation, keep at least 1 foot
away from the specimen. Do not
taste, or smell any chemicals. Waft
with your hand over the top of the
container to detect any slight odors.

HANDLING GLASSWARE AND EQUIPMENT

20. . Clean up broken glassware


immediately. Place it in the
labeled crock at the front of
the lab. Obtain replacement
glassware from the instructor.

21. Examine glassware before each use. Never


use chipped, cracked, or dirty glassware.
22. Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water.
The glassware may shatter.

HEATING SUBSTANCES

23. Avoid touching hot objects.


Burns are a common accident in
the chemistry lab. Be careful
when using hot plates and objects
which have been heated on them.
Use beaker tongs to remove hot
containers from the hot plate.

24. Rinse spills off skin immediately. Rinse off any


chemicals spilled on the skin immediately with
large amounts of water.
25. Properly dispose of waste chemicals. Certain
liquids can be poured into the sink and flushed
with water while others are poured into
designated waste containers. Most solid wastes
are placed in designated crocks. Your instructor
will provide disposal instructions each lab.
