Microsoft Word Formatting

Directions: Follow the directions in each formatting section and apply


each formatting change to the entire sentence. Be mindful that some
sentences require more than one formatting change.

Font Styles
Microsoft Word has many different font styles. Change the following
sentences to the fonts specified. Fonts are listed in alphabetical order
in the dropdown menu.

Your turn:

1. Change this sentence to the font name “Arial”.


2. Change this sentence to the font name “Lucida handwriting”.
3. Change this sentence to the font name “Curlz MT”.
4. Change this sentence to the font name “Freestyle Script”

Font Size
Point Size is the height of a letter measured vertically (from top to bottom)

● 72 pts. = 1”
vertically
● 36 pts. = ½” vertically
● 18 pts = ¼” vertically
● 12 pts. Is the default in Microsoft Word

Alignment
This sentence is left aligned which is the default

This sentence is centered

This sentence is right aligned

This paragraph is typed in justify. The left and right margins are perfectly even
like a newspaper column. The computer places extra spaces between the words
in order to accomplish this.

Your turn:

Right align this sentence, make the font Berlin Sans FB,
italicize the letters, and make the size 18 pts.

Align this sentence using justify, make the font


Bradley Hand ITC, bold the letters, and make the
size 20 pts.
Center-align this sentence.

You can also use alignment on objects such as pictures and graphs, not just text. Try it with
the picture below. Center align the picture.
Indentation
Indents can be made to paragraphs using the increase indent button.

Indent this sentence using the increase indent button only once. All lines
should be indented to the same spot on the document.

Indent this sentence 2” from the left using the paragraph


menu indentation left indentation. In the left indentation
box, type 2”. All lines should be indented to the same spot
on the document.

Indent this sentence 2” using the paragraph menu. Click


“special” and click the first line only. Enter 2 next to that menu option even
though it will auto input 0.5. Only the first line of the sentence should be
indented.

Numbered & Bulleted Lists


You can create numbered lists.

You can change the format of the numbers. You can change the format of the
bullets.

Change the list below to roman numerals using the drop down list on the
numbered list icon.

Change the list below to a lettered list (A. B. C.) using the drop down list on the
numbered list icon.

Change the list below to square points using the drop down list on the bulleted

Line spacing

The line spacing on your document can be changed. The most common
spacing is single, 1.5, or double spaced. Use the line spacing icon in
the paragraph menu or Control +2, Control +l to change line spacing.

Your turn:

Change the font of this paragraph to Rockwell. Change the size to 16.

Let’s change the line spacing of this paragraph to double spaced by

pressing Ctrl + 2 on your keyboard. Congrats! Now you have learned

the shortcut for double spaced.

Let’s change the line spacing of this paragraph to 2.5 spacing by using

the line spacing menu icon. Congrats! Now you have learned how to

create custom line spacing.

Page Setup & Other Formatting Options

Page Background color:


Change the background color of this document. To do this, click on the
design tab. On the right of the menu there will be an icon labeled
“page color”.
● Change the Page Color to Blue, Accent 5, Lighter 80%. If you hover
over the color options, the color name will appear.

Page Margins:
Margin Size Defaults to 1 inch on each side of the page. Change the
margins on the top, bottom, left and right. To do this, click on the
Layout Tab. Click on the margins icon, then click custom margins at
the bottom of the menu.
● Change the top and bottom margins to 0.5. Change the left and
right margins to 0.25.

Pictures & Shapes:


You can insert pictures, lines and shapes into your document. To do
this, click on the Insert Tab.
● Insert a 5 point star below using the shapes option of the
illustrations menu of the insert tab. Once you click 5 point star,
double click below and the default size star will appear.

Assignment: Create 2 separate sentences. Change their sizing, color,


line spacing, alignment, add an effect, and change their font to one
that isn’t already on your default list. Do this for EACH sentence. You
can’t repeat a formatting option, they must all be different. You must
label which formatting you used for each sentence. My example is
below.

Step 1: Write your sentence.

My favorite season is autumn because I love how beautiful the


leaves look when they change colors.
Step 2: Change the formatting options and label your choices below.
