Note: If the fit is too tight, you might also need to adjust the armholes for comfort.

Step 4: Adjusting the Chest and Waist

The chest and waist are key areas for shaping the jacket. If the jacket is too baggy, it can look
unflattering.

A. Taking in the Waist and Sides:

To achieve a more fitted look, you’ll need to take in the side seams of the jacket.

How to take in the waist and sides:

1. Use a seam ripper to undo the side seams.

2. Pin the new side seam placement, keeping the fit as even as possible.
3. Mark the new seam lines with tailor’s chalk.
4. Re-sew the side seams and press the fabric flat.
5. Ensure the front and back panels of the jacket are aligned before finishing.

B. Adding Darts (Optional):

If you want to add more shape to the waist, you can create darts. Darts are small, diagonal seams
sewn into the fabric to give shape to the waist and bust.

How to add darts:

1. Pinch the fabric in areas where you want more shaping (usually the back and front waist
area).
2. Mark the desired dart length and width with chalk.
3. Pin the fabric in place, and sew the dart from the bottom (wide end) to the top (narrow
end), tapering the seam.
4. Press the darts flat.

Step 5: Adjusting the Sleeves

Proper sleeve length is essential for a polished, well-tailored jacket.

A. Shortening Sleeves:

To shorten the sleeves, you need to adjust the cuff area or the sleeve itself.
1
How to shorten sleeves:

1. Turn the jacket inside out and carefully unpick the cuffs or seam at the end of the sleeve.
2. Measure how much fabric you need to remove, and use tailor’s chalk to mark this length.
3. Cut off the excess fabric, leaving about 1 inch of extra fabric for the new hem.
4. Fold the raw edge of the sleeve under by 1 inch to create a neat hem.
5. Reattach the cuff or finish the sleeve hem with a blind stitch or machine stitching.

B. Tightening the Sleeves:

If the sleeves are too wide, you’ll need to take in the sleeve seams.

How to take in the sleeves:

1. Unpick the side seams of the sleeves.

2. Pin the sleeve tighter along the arm, ensuring the fit is smooth without puckering.
3. Mark and sew the new seam.
4. Press the sleeve seam flat.
