RELATIVE PRONOUNS & RELATIVE CLAUSES

EXERCISE 1
Complete the sentence with the correct relative pronoun. Put the pronoun
between brackets if it can be omitted.

1. George, ________ [whose/who] father is a doctor, is a nice boy.


2. This is the animal ________ [which/who] John saw last week.
3. He is the boy ________ [which/that] broke the window.
4. I don’t understand the reason ________ [because/why/] he got so angry.
5. ________ [which/what/where] you say is false. I strongly disagree.
6. That is the school ________ [when/who/where] Andrew works.
7. Mary, ________ [who/which] was eighteen yesterday, is one of my best
friends. (It could never be THAT, because THAT can't be used after a
comma)
8. The table, ________ [which/who] you broke yesterday, was bought by my
grandmother. (It could never be THAT, for the same reason as in sentence
number 7)
9. I don’t understand ________ [what/that/] you say. Could you repeat it?
10. That is the dog ________ [who/that] I told you yesterday.

EXERCISE 2
Use the relative pronouns in the box to complete the sentences. Put it
between brackets if it can be omitted.

EXERCISE 3
Combine the 2 sentences with a relative clause, adding commas to
separate it from the main clause when the information given is not
relevant (non-defining). Follow the example:
Step 1 - Tim used to work at this shop. He's very good with
computers.
Step 2 - Tim ↓ used to work at this shop. who's very good with
computers.
Step 3 - Tim, who's very good with computers, [we use
commas because the information doesn't define Tim]
used to work at this shop.
