1. Title:

Alcohol Detection & Engine Lock system with GPS

Tracking System.

2. Aim, Objective, scope of Problem, Reasons for selecting

problem, Theoretical and Practical aspects for selecting the
problem

a) Aim:
The aim of this project is to develop an innovative and practical system capable
of detecting the presence of alcohol in a driver's breath, disabling the vehicle’s
engine to prevent operation, and providing GPS-based tracking for enhanced
safety and accountability. This system targets the reduction of road accidents
caused by drunk driving and provides real-time monitoring for personal and
commercial vehicles.

The system integrates advanced technologies such as alcohol sensors, GPS

modules, and engine lock mechanisms to ensure that individuals under the
influence of alcohol are unable to operate vehicles. By combining safety features
with tracking capabilities, the project addresses a critical societal need while
leveraging the potential of modern embedded systems and IoT technologies.

To design and implement a system that detects alcohol consumption in drivers,

disables the vehicle engine to prevent operation, and tracks the vehicle's location
via GPS to ensure safety and prevent accidents caused by intoxicated driving.
b) Introduction:

Drunk driving continues to be a major cause of traffic deaths worldwide, resulting

in fatalities, property damage, and legal repercussions. The growing accessibility
of low-cost microcontroller-based technology offers a chance to successfully
tackle this problem. In order to improve monitoring and accountability, this
project aims to create a complete solution that not only prohibits drunk drivers
from operating motor vehicles but also makes vehicle tracking easier.

This project, which aims to make roadways safer through preventive measures, is
based on the ideas of technological innovation and public safety. The suggested
solution offers a two-pronged strategy to deal with this problem by combining
GPS tracking and alcohol detection. Installing such technologies in private and
commercial automobiles can greatly lower the number of drunk driving
accidents.

c) Objective:
The primary objective of this project is to develop a reliable and cost-effective
system that detects alcohol consumption, prevents vehicle operation by
intoxicated drivers, and tracks vehicle location in real-time.
The Alcohol senses engine lock and GPS is to develop a system that can detect
alcohol consumption in a driver, automatically lock the vehicle's engine to
prevent it from starting, and provide GPS tracking to monitor the vehicle's
location.
This system aims to reduce accidents caused by drunk driving and enhance road
safety by ensuring that intoxicated individuals cannot operate a vehicle.
The system detects the alcohol level present in the air inside the vehicle. Hence
the system will reduce the number of road accidents and casualties due to drunk
driving in future.
Example:
• Detect the alcohol.
• Lock the engine.
• Notify the fleet manager with the vehicle's exact GPS location.

Specific objectives include:

• Implementing a sensitive and accurate alcohol detection mechanism.

• Integrating an engine lock system that activates upon detection of high
alcohol levels.
• Incorporating a GPS tracking module for real-time location sharing.
• Ensuring the system is user-friendly and adaptable to various vehicle types.
• Providing a scalable solution that can be implemented on a larger scale, such
as fleet management or public transportation.

d) Scope of problem:
Drunk driving is a major public safety concern, contributing to thousands of
accidents annually. The scope of this project extends beyond the immediate
prevention of drunk driving incidents to include broader applications such as:
To develop a comprehensive safety system that detects alcohol levels in drivers,
prevents vehicle ignition, and tracks the vehicle's location in real time.
• Enhance Road Safety: Prevents drunk driving and potential accidents.

• Real-Time Monitoring: Provides live updates on vehicle location to improve

response time during emergencies.

• Future Potential: Expandable to include more safety features like fatigue

detection.

• The lack of preventive measures in existing vehicles.

• Delayed intervention by law enforcement in drunk driving cases.

• Limited options for real-time vehicle tracking in emergencies.

• Rising concerns about road safety and legal accountability for drivers and
vehicle owners.

e) Reasons for selecting the problem:

By selecting this problem, we aim to combine engineering expertise with social
responsibility, creating a system that aligns with contemporary safety needs and
technological advancements.

Reasons:

1. Rising Road Accidents Due to Drunk Driving: Statistics from global traffic safety
reports highlight that drunk driving contributes significantly to road accidents and
fatalities worldwide.
2. Social Responsibility: Creating a proactive solution aligns with the broader goal of
ensuring public safety and reducing road-related deaths.
3. Technological Feasibility: Advances in sensor technologies, GPS modules, and
microcontrollers make it practical to implement this project.
4. Legal Implications: Governments worldwide are enforcing stricter laws to curb
drunk driving. This project provides a technological complement to such initiatives.
5. Cost-Effectiveness: By employing widely available components, this project
remains financially feasible, allowing for broad adoption.

By addressing a critical societal issue, this project aims to make a tangible difference
in road safety and accident prevention.

3. Research Methodology to be employed:

The project adopts a systematic approach that integrates experimental setups,

hardware development, and real-world testing to achieve its objectives. The
methodology comprises the following steps:

• Arduino IDE: Used for programming the microcontroller to control the

system’s functions. Arduino IDE is an open-source software, designed by
Arduino.cc and mainly used for writing, compiling & uploading code to
almost all Arduino Modules. It is an official Arduino software, making code
compilation too easy that even a common person with no prior technical
knowledge can get their feet wet with the learning process. It is available for
all operating systems i.e. MAC, Windows, Linux and runs on the Java.

• GPS Tracking Software or APIs: Facilitates real-time visualization of the

vehicle’s location. The NEO-6M is a GPS module that utilizes the ublox 6
positioning technology. It receives signals from satellites to determine accurate
location, time, and velocity data. Widely used in navigation systems and IoT
applications, the NEO-6M provides precise GPS information to connected
devices through communication interface.

The system integrates these components into a compact and reliable unit that can
be easily installed in vehicles. Careful consideration is given to ensuring
compatibility and ease of maintenance.

A. Experimental Set-Up: The system will be built using an Arduino

microcontroller, MQ-3 alcohol sensors, a GPS module, a GSM module, and
a vehicle ignition system. A prototype vehicle model will serve as the test
bed for the experimental setup.

The experimental setup for this project is designed to integrate various

hardware and software components to achieve the desired functionality. The
key elements include:
Hardware Components:

• MQ-3 Alcohol Sensor: To detect the presence of alcohol in the driver’s

breath. The sensor is calibrated to detect alcohol levels and send signals to
the microcontroller.

• Arduino UNO Microcontroller: Serves as the central processing unit,

receiving input from the alcohol sensor and GPS module, and controlling the
relay module to lock the engine.
• Relay Module: Used to control the engine’s ignition system. The relay

Disconnects the ignition circuit if alcohol is detected.

• GPS Module (e.g., NEO-6M): Provides real-time location tracking, sending

data to a monitoring system or user interface.

• GSM Module (Optional): Sends alerts to predefined contacts in case

alcohol is detected or for emergency purposes.
• Power Supply: Provides necessary power to all components, ensuring
uninterrupted operation of the system.

B. Measurement Techniques:
The Alcohol Detection and Engine Lock System with GPS Tracking aims to
enhance road safety by preventing intoxicated individuals from operating a
vehicle and enabling real-time tracking. Effective measurement techniques are
critical for ensuring system reliability and accuracy. This section discusses the
theoretical principles behind the measurement techniques used in the system.

1. Alcohol Detection
• The MQ-3 sensor is employed for detecting alcohol concentration in the
driver's breath.
• The sensor’s sensitive layer is made of SnO2, which exhibits a lower
resistance when exposed to alcohol.
• Output voltage from the sensor varies with alcohol concentration, which is
converted into readable data by the Arduino.
• Measurement units are calibrated in ppm (parts per million) to indicate
alcohol levels.
2. Threshold Measurement
• The threshold alcohol level is preset based on legal limits (e.g., 0.08% BAC
in many countries).
• The Arduino compares sensor readings against this threshold to determine if
the engine lock should activate.
3. GPS Tracking
• The Neo-6M GPS module receives signals from multiple satellites to calculate
the vehicle’s precise location.
• The module outputs data in NMEA format, which includes latitude, longitude,
altitude, and speed.

• The Arduino processes this data and transmits it via the GSM module to
designated recipients.
4. Engine Lock Mechanism
• A relay module is used to control the vehicle's ignition system.
• When alcohol detection exceeds the threshold, the Arduino triggers the relay
to cut off the ignition circuit.
5. Alert System
• The GSM module sends SMS alerts containing the vehicle’s location to
predefined contacts.
• Alerts include information such as the driver’s alcohol level and realtime
location.
6. Integration and Calibration
• The system undergoes extensive testing to ensure accurate sensor readings and
response.
• Calibration is performed to match sensor output with known alcohol
concentrations.
4. Expected Outcome:
The Alcohol Detection and Engine Lock System with GPS Tracking aims to
enhance road safety by preventing intoxicated individuals from operating
vehicles and providing real-time location tracking. The expected outcomes of the
system are outlined below:
• A fully functional prototype of the Alcohol Detection and Engine Lock System
with GPS Tracking.
• Reliable detection of alcohol levels with a high degree of accuracy.
• Immediate engine lock activation upon detecting intoxicated drivers.
• Real-time GPS data transmission to designated recipients.
• A scalable, cost-effective solution ready for further development and
commercialization.
Figure no: 4.1 Circuit diagram
