Quiz 2a-Solution

The document presents a quiz problem involving a counter current heat exchanger where saturated steam transfers heat to a methanol stream, raising its temperature from 65°C to 260°C. It includes calculations for the steam flow rate required for the heat exchange and the heat transferred, resulting in a steam flow rate of 1.27 kg/min and a heat transfer of approximately 52.64 kW. The calculations are based on energy balance principles and specific enthalpy values for steam and methanol.

Quiz 2a – November 4th, 2020

1. Saturated steam at 86 bar enters a counter current heat exchanger where heat is transferred to a stream
of methanol in the vapour phase. The methanol stream is heated from an initial temperature of 65°C
to a temperature of 260°C, and has a flow rate of 6500 L/min (STP). The saturated steam condenses
into liquid water and leaves the exchanger at 90°C. The exchanger operates adiabatically.
a. Calculate the steam flow rate in kg/min (ṁ1) necessary to ensure this heat exchange.
b. Calculate the heat transferred (Q) from one fluid to another in the exchanger in kW.

Thoroughly explain all calculations and demonstrate your work.

Solution:

a) Calculate ṁ1

Steam inlet:
𝑃1 = 86 bar (sat)
𝑇1 = 300.1℃ (from 𝐓𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐁. 𝟔)
Ĥ = 2750.9 kJ/kg

Water outlet:
𝑇1 = 90℃
Ĥ = 377 kJ/kg (from 𝐓𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐁. 𝟓)

1
CH3OH balance:
1 mol 6500 L 1 mol
𝑛2 = V2 × = × = 290.18 mol/min = 4.84 mol/s
22.4 L (STP) min 22.4 L (STP)

Energy balance:
𝑄 = ∆𝐻 = ∑ ṁ𝑖 Ĥ𝑖 − ∑ ṁ𝑖 Ĥ𝑖 = 0 (adiabatic)
𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑖𝑛

65℃
Ĥ𝐶𝐻3𝑂𝐻,𝑖𝑛 = ∫ 𝐶𝑝 𝑑𝑇
25℃

65℃
𝑏𝑇 2 𝑐𝑇 3 𝑑𝑇 4
=∫ (𝑎 + 𝑏𝑇 + 𝑐𝑇 2 + 𝑑𝑇 3 )𝑑𝑇 = 𝑎𝑇 + + +
25℃ 2 3 4

𝑎 = 0.04293, 𝑏 = 8.301 × 10−5 , 𝑐 = −1.87 × 10−8 , 𝑑 = −8.03 × 10−12 (from 𝐓𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐁. 𝟐)

Ḣ𝐶𝐻3𝑂𝐻,𝑖𝑛 = 1.865 kJ/mol

Ḣ𝐶𝐻3𝑂𝐻,𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 12.749 kJ/mol

0 = ṁ1 (Ĥ𝐻2𝑂,𝑜𝑢𝑡 − Ĥ𝐻2𝑂,𝑖𝑛 ) + 𝑛2 (Ḣ𝐶𝐻3𝑂𝐻,𝑜𝑢𝑡 − Ḣ𝐶𝐻3𝑂𝐻,𝑖𝑛 )

= ṁ1 (377 − 2750.9) + 290.18(12.749 − 1.865)

ṁ1 = 1.27 kg/min = 0.022 kg/s

b) Calculate heat transfer between liquids

In terms of water:

𝑄 = ∆𝐻 = ṁ1 (Ĥ𝐻2𝑂,𝑜𝑢𝑡 − Ĥ𝐻2𝑂,𝑖𝑛 ) = 0.022(377 − 2750.9) = −52.23 kW

In terms of methanol:

𝑄 = ∆𝐻 = 𝑛2 (Ḣ𝐶𝐻3𝑂𝐻,𝑜𝑢𝑡 − Ḣ𝐶𝐻3𝑂𝐻,𝑖𝑛 ) = 4.84(12.749 − 1.865) = 52.64 kW
