Problem 1

 Assuming a uniform live load of 50 psf is applied to the floor shown below.
There are three elevated floors being supported by the base columns as shown.
What is the minimum unfactored live load that you can design Column 1 for?
Column 1
A) 126.0 kips

B) 63.0 kips

C) 50.4 kips

D) 163.8 kips

2
Problem 1 SOLUTION

Column 1

The tributary area for each

floor on Column 1 = 48 ft /2 x
35 ft = 840 ft2
For three floors this gives
3 x 840 ft 2 = 2520 ft2
LLRF =Lo 0.25 =

50 0.25
= 50(0.399) but min = 50 x
0.4 = 20 psf (use this)

Total column live load =

20 x 2520 = 50.4 kips
Answer C

Problem 2

 Assuming a uniform live load of 65 psf is applied to the floor shown below.
There are three elevated floors. What is the minimum unfactored live load
moment that you can design Beam 1 for ?

A) 122.2 kip.ft

B) 79.6 kip.ft Beam 1

C) 70.4 kip.ft

D) 35.2 kip.ft

4
Problem 2 SOLUTION

The tributary area for Beam 1=35 ft x 8 ft = 280 ft2

As per ASCE 7-10 -4.7.2
LLRF =Lo 0.25 = 65 0.25
note beam KLL = 2 Beam 1

=65(0.884) = 57.46 psf

but min for one floor = 65 x 0.5 = 32.5 psf

Use 57.46 psf

roof diaphragm must be designed for in the single story warehouse building shown
below. Assume a Category II building, Ss = 0.2g , S1 = 0.1g,TL = 12 s, no site
information is available, and the roof weights are 19.5 psf. The ordinary reinforced
concrete walls (all exterior walls are shear walls) are 20 ft tall and have a self
weight of 80 psf. Assume this building has a steel frame carrying the vertical loads.

Problem 7 SOLUTION

Based on the configuration of the supports the moment at C must be zero. The
change in moment must linear as the shear diagram will be a series of constant
values.

D has a moment value at C, so is wrong, B and C have a zero moment at B which

is wrong. Thus the only configuration it could be is A.

The correct value is A.

Problem 8

Assuming ASCE 7 applies, determine the maximum main wind force resisting
windward system (North South) design pressure (directional procedure). Assume
the warehouse has the plan shown below, V = 115 MPH, the wall height is 15 ft
and the mean roof height is 36.7 ft. This is in an exposure C area with no hills
nearby.

B) 21.9 psf
Metal Roof
C) 32.2 psf diaphragm
200 ft
D) 24.0 psf

250 ft

17
Problem 8 SOLUTION

From ASCE 7 use directional procedure , Equation 27.3-1 ASCE 7

qz= 0.000256Kz Kzt Kd V2 (EQ. 27.3-1)

From Table 26.6-1 Kd = 0.85 , No hills so Kzt = 1.0 ,

from Table 27.3-1 for MWFRS Kz for 0-15 = 0.85 (exp. C), Note for later calculations Kz for h = 36.3 = 1.02

qz= 0.000256(0.85)(1.0)(0.85)(115)2= 24.5 psf

Design pressures for MWFRS are given by

p= qGCp –qi(GCpi ) (EQ. 27.4-1)

For enclosed buildings qi = qh = 0.00256 (1.02)(1.0)(0.85)(115)2 = 29.4 psf, q = q at z = 0-15 = 24.5

GCpi is from Table26.11-1 = 0.18 for enclosed buildings , From Section 26.9.1,G can be taken as 0.85

Cp for wall for all L/B ratios = 0.80

Thus p = 24.5 (0.85) (0.8) - 29.4(( 0.18 ) = 16.66  5.29 = 21.9 psf for negative internal pressure

Answer B is the nearest. 18
