Descriptive Stats in Excel: Measures of position,

dispersion and shape

Using data on municipalities of Caribbean Region in Colombia (provided in Excel),


lets,

1. Visualize data in Excel

Taking a first look, the filter options, the function wizard:

-Find basic descriptive statistics using the function wizard

-Visualise as much as you can: graphs and charts

2. Compute some descriptive statistics:

*First install “Data Analysis toolkit”:

-Descriptive statistics using the Data Analysis toolkit:

a. Position measures: Mean, Median, Mode, 1st and 3rd quartiles, and deciles
b. Dispersion Measures: Range, Interquartile Range, Variance, Standard
Deviation
-The starting point is the file where we see the information of 194 Colombian
municipalities. The data is referred to 5 different quantitative variables, being the first
two columns the identification codes (numeric and nominal) of these municipalities.

In order to compute the descriptive statistics, we use the Data Analysis toolkit, that
you installed in our computer.

The result is a window where we select the option Descriptive Statistics

Then we select the range for the data set, $C$1:$G$195, and the option Summary
Statistics.
The result reports the main descriptive statistics of all selected variables.

We can also find out the requested results by using formulas. In this case, for instance,
we can define the Interquartile Range, that was not displayed above.
