Unocal

The document discusses Unocal's involvement in a natural gas pipeline project in Burma and identifies alternatives for how Unocal can respect human rights while maintaining profitability. It identifies key stakeholders including Unocal, the Burmese government and military, and ethnic groups affected by the project. It suggests Unocal should have researched the situation more thoroughly before entering the contract and should have advised and guided the Burmese military's actions to protect human rights. An alternative would be for Unocal to take control of labor on the project to prevent human rights abuses.

Define the problem How can Unacol influence Burmese Government to respect human and property

rights affected in the pipeline project without sacrificing profitability for both parties? Question Identify stakeholders (parties involved) and get the facts Unocal Union Oil Company of California, founded in 1890 to develop oil fields around Los Angeles. Burma rich in natural gas resources, and its many other untapped resources. Entry point into other potentially lucrative international market. Poor country, inflation is above 20% and high infant mortality rate. Military dictatorship accused of continually violating the human rights of the Burmese people. Thailand Benefactor of the Yadana field project. Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) State-owned company of Burma. Task to find private companies to help Burma develop the Yadana Field Total S. A. French Company. Signed a contract with MOGE that gave Total the right to develop the field and build a pipeline to transport the gas from Yadana to Thiland. Karens their family members had been subjected to relocation, forced labor, torture, murder, and rape on the Yadana pipeline project.

Identify Alternatives (always anticipate consequences)

Unocal should have a deeper study and research made first before entering this contract. Unocal should have understood that the cost of human life is greater than all the benefits they can get from this project. They should realized that a person's life is more valuable than physical things, and that nothing justifies lost of life even if it does benefit millions of people. The consequence here is that it will take longer time for research and further studies also even longer time for Unocal to understand the concept the persons life is far more important than anything else.

Unocal should also advice/ add more attention in the actions of the Burmese Government regarding the help they will give to this pipeline project. Unocal should be capable or have the power to tell the military on what to do and what are donts. In this way they shows respect for Burmese allowing the government to realize that it is possible to be profitable without a lost of lives. Key words Evaluate alternatives (2 steps ahead to control)

Unocal should have take control in guiding Burmese military regarding their task to help Unacol to clean and put some establishments where they are going to put the pipeline

Make a decision

Unacol should have talked to the Burma first before entering in this project. They should have an understanding regarding the proper use of human labourers to gain the profit they want. They should have realized between themselves the importance of human life behind everything else.

Implementation plan of the decision (scenario)

Unacol should have take charge in leading Burmese (esp. Karens) to help them to clean and put establishments that are useful for the pipeline project. Method of evaluation (metrics/measure)

We can evaluate this by comparing the profits Burma and Unacol will have when they violate human rights vs. when they applied every right of human being.
