Chess Rules
All standard rules for the game apply. These are the highlights:
• Each person should have chess clock installed on their phones
• If you touch a piece on the chessboard, you must move it.
a. This is known as the “touch-move rule” and is often a source of difficulty for players new to
tournaments.
b. It also requires you to capture an opponent’s piece if you touch it.
c. This rule only applies if you can make a legal move with the piece you touched.
• All players must understand
a. pawn promotion.
b. rules for “advanced” moves: Castling and en passant capture (note: please ask the organizer in
case of any confusion about en passant rule)
c. Check and the ways to get out of check (move, block, capture)
d. 50 moves draw rule i.e., the game can be claimed drawn after 50 moves if there are no pawn
moves or no captures.
e. 3-fold repetition rule. the game can be claimed drawn if the exact same position is repeated
thrice.
• If a piece is awkwardly placed, you can adjust it; simply say “I adjust” before touching the piece to make it
clear to your opponent that you don’t intend to move it.
• Chess pieces should be moved and placed properly.
• Never hesitate to ask a tournament director (TD) to clarify any confusion you may have about the rules.
• If your phone rings in the playing area, you will likely be subject to a penalty, and may even have to forfeit
your game.
• If any player moves his piece with either hand he has to press the clock with the respective hand.
Otherwise there will be a penalty.
• So, if you make an illegal move in chess, you will either lose the game immediately or after the arbiters
have decided the game by carefully reviewing it. Most of the time, if an illegal move has occurred during
a game, the arbiter may decide to restart the game, or by default, your opponent wins.
• Tournament chess is played with time limits, which vary by event. Time is kept by using a chess clock.
• Win, lose, or draw, both players are required to make sure the proper result is recorded. If you’re not sure
where to mark down your result, ask a director for help.
• No outside assistance during the game is allowed
Note:
* The team will be expelled from the event if they create disputes.
* In case of conflicts the decision of sports committee will be final.
