CL-Experiment-with-answers

The document outlines three experiments demonstrating the effects of temperature on gas behavior using balloons and ping pong balls. In each experiment, hot water causes expansion of gases, leading to inflation of balloons and slight expansion of the ping pong ball, while cold water results in contraction. The guide questions encourage observations on how temperature impacts gas volume and behavior.

Experiment 1

Materials:

 Glass soda bottle

 Balloon
 Rubber band
 Two basin
 Cold and hot water
 Ice cubes

Procedure:

1. Take a basin and add cold water. Then, add few ice cubes to it to
keep it cold.
2. Take another basin and add some amount of hot water into it.
Ensure that the water is hot.
3. Bring the Balloon over the neck or mouth of the glass bottle, and fix
the mouth of the Balloon to the mouth of the bottle using a rubber
band.
4. Bring the bottle into the basin containing hot water. Allow it to sit for
some time. Observe what will happen.
5. Bring the same bottle into the other basin containing cold water.
And allow it to sit for some time. Observe what will happen.

Guide Questions:

1. What changes occur in the balloon when the bottle is placed in hot
water, and how do these changes differ when the bottle is placed in
cold water?
2. How does the temperature of the water affect the inflation and
deflation of the balloon when the bottle is placed in hot and cold
water?
Experiment 2

Materials:

 Balloon
 Two containers
 Hot and cold water

Procedure:

1. Blow up a balloon at least half way its size.

2. Tie it close by tying the neck of the balloon.
3. Fill a container with hot water half way.
4. Fill another container with cold water.
5. Put and submerge the balloon in the containers with hot and cold
water.
6. Observe what will happen.

Guide Question:

1. How does the temperature of the water affect the size of the balloon
when it is submerged in hot and cold water?
2. What can you infer about the behavior of gases in the balloon when
exposed to different temperatures?
Experiment 3

Materials:

 Ping pong ball

 Hot and cold water
 Two containers

Procedure:

 Fill a container with hot water at least half way.

 Fill another container with cold water at least half way.
 Put a ping pong ball in the cold water, and in hot water. Observe
what will happen to the ping pong ball.

Guide Question:

1. What changes occur in the ping pong ball when it is placed in hot
water, and how do these changes differ when the ball is placed in
cold water?
2. What can you infer about the behavior of gases in the ping pong ball
when exposed to different temperatures?

Answer:

1. When the bottle is placed in hot water, the air inside the bottle
heats up, expands, and causes the balloon to inflate. On the other
hand, when the bottle is placed in cold water, the air inside the
bottle cools down, contracts, and causes the balloon to deflate.
2. The temperature of the water directly affects the volume inside the
bottle and the balloon. Hot water increases the air temperature
inside the bottle, causing the air to expand and inflate the balloon.
Conversely, cold water decreases the air temperature inside the
bottle, causing the air to contract and deflate the balloon.

1. When the balloon is submerged in hot water, the air inside the
balloon heats up, causing the balloon to expand, while when the
balloon is submerged in cold water, the air inside the balloon cools
down, causing the balloon to contract.
2. Gases expand when heated and contract when cooled. When the
balloon is placed in hot water, the increased temperature causes the
gas molecules inside the balloon to move more rapidly and spread
out, leading to expansion. In contrast, when the balloon is placed in
cold water, the decreased temperature causes the gas molecules to
slow down and move closer together, leading to contraction.

1. When the ping pong ball is placed in hot water, the air inside the
ball heats up, causing the ball to expand slightly. On the other hand,
when the ping pong ball is placed in cold water, the air inside the
ball cools down, causing the ball to contract slightly.
2. The behavior of gases in the ping pong ball demonstrates that gases
expand when heated and contract when cooled. In hot water, the air
molecules inside the ball move more rapidly, and spread out,
causing the ball to expand, while in cold water, air molecules move
more slowly, and come closer together, causing the ball to contract.

1. When you open a can of cold soda, you generally observe less fizz
compared to a hot soda. The cold soda will have smaller bubbles
that form more slowly. In contrast, opening a can of hot soda results
in a much more vigorous fizzing action with larger bubbles that form
and rise quickly.
2. The temperature of the soda directly affects the amount of fizz
produced when the cans are opened. When the soda is hot the
carbon dioxide molecules inside the can move more rapidly, and
spread out. In contrast, when the soda is cold, carbon dioxide
molecules move more slowly, and come closer together, and
dissolved in the liquid.
