Question 1

A group of friends, of whom some are seniors, had a gathering. They spent their time in a buffet
restaurant that charged $30/adult and $24/senior for lunch and $45/adult and $32/senior for dinner. If
the amounts of lunch and dinner that they paid are, respectively, $468 and $674, find the numbers of
adults and seniors in the gathering.

Solution:
Let:
x: Number of adults
y: Number of seniors

30x + 24y = 468 5x + 4y = 78 8*(5x + 4y) = 8*(78)

45x + 32y = 674 45x + 32y = 674 40x + 32y = 624

(45x + 32y) - (40x + 32y) = 674 – 624

5x = 50

x = 10

5(10) + 4y = 78

50 + 4y = 78

4y = 28

y=7

For lunch:

30(10) + 24(7) = 300 + 168 = 468

For dinner:
45(10) + 32(7) = 450 + 224 = 674
Answer:

The gathering consisted of:

10 adults 7 seniors

Question 2
In a store, customer A paid $49.15 for 10 oranges, 5 boxes of strawberries, and 6 kilos of grapes;
customer B paid $67.15 for 7 oranges, 8 boxes of strawberries, and 8 kilos of grapes; and customer
C paid $69.45 for 12 oranges, 9 boxes of strawberries, and 5 kilos of grapes.
a. Let 𝑥 be the price of oranges, 𝑦 be the price of strawberries, and 𝑧 be the price of grapes to write
a system of linear equations.

(b) Solve the system of linear equations of part (a) to determine the values of 𝑥, 𝑦, and 𝑧.

Solution:

Let:

x: Price of an orange

y: Price of a box of strawberries

z: Price of a kilo of grapes

10x + 5y + 6z = 49.15

7x + 8y + 8z = 67.15

12x + 9y + 5z = 69.45

10x + 5y + 6z = 49.15

7x + 84 + 8z = 67.15

10x + 5y + 6z = 49.15

12x + 9y + 5z = 69.45

45x + 8z = 57.45

30x + 29z = 95.1

x = 0.85

y = 2.4

10 × 0.85 + 5y + 6 × 2.4 = 49.15

y = 5.25

10 x 0.85 + 5×5.25 + 6 x 2.4 = 49.15

983/20 = 983/20
7×0.85 + 8 × 5.25 +8 × 2.4=67.15

1343/20 = 1343/20

12×0.85 + 9 × 5.25 + 5 × 2.4 = 69.45

1389/20 = 1389/20

x = 0.85

y = 5 .25

z = 2.4

Answer:

Price of an orange (x): $0.85

Price of a box of strawberries (y): $5.25

Price of a kilo of grapes (z): $2.40

Question 3

(a) What is the line in slope-intercept form that passes through the point (14, 6) and is parallel to the
line 2𝑦 + 5 = 3𝑥?
(b) What is the line in slope-intercept form that passes through the point (15, −11) and is
perpendicular to the line 3𝑦 + 5𝑥 = 12?

Solution:

Parallel:

m1 = m2

y = mx + b

(y - y1) = m*(x - x1)

2y + 5 = 3x

y = 3x-5/2

m = 3/2
(y - 6) = 3/2(x - 14)

y - 6 = 3/2x - 21

y = 3/2x - 15

Perpendicular:

m1*m2 = -1

3y + 5x = 12

y = 12-5x/3

m = -5/3

(y + 11) = 3/5(x-15)

y = 3/5x-20

Question 4

A firm produces two goods: X and Y and sells the former for $2 per unit and the latter for $1.50 per
unit. It can produce a total of at most 45,000 units a day in both goods, but must produce at least 2
units of good Y for every unit of good X. In addition, at least 12,000 units of good Y must be
produced each day to meet the current demand. How many of each type of good should the firm
produce to maximize the firm’s revenue?

(a) Express the objective function and the constrains in a linear-programming problem. Plot a graph to
shade the feasible region of this problem.

(b) Evaluate all the corner points to determine which one satisfies the objective function.

Solution:
