9. Let A be an n × n matrix and α be a scalar. Find the eigenvalues of A − αI in terms
of eigenvalues of A. Further show that A and A − αI have the same eigenvectors.

10. Justify your answers for the following set problems: (i) Do A and AT have same
eigenvectors? (ii) Are the eigenvalues of A + B sums of the eigenvalues of A and B?
(iii) Do there exist nonsingular skew-symmetric n × n matrices with odd n? (iv) Do
there exist skew-symmetric orthogonal 3 × 3 matrices?

11. Let A be an n × n matrix. Show that if A is idempotent A2 = A then its eigenvalues


are 0 and 1.

12. Let A be an n × n matrix. Show that if A is nilpotent (i.e. Am = O for some m ∈ N),
then all its eigenvalues are 0.

13. Find the matrix of eigenvectors and diagonalise. Show the details as well.
