Assignment 2

The document outlines an assignment focused on second order systems, including deriving output functions for various responses and conditions, explaining system characteristics, and defining key terms like time constant and damping coefficient. It also covers transfer functions for a three-tank system, linearization, and includes tasks related to Laplace transforms and the convolution theorem. Additionally, it addresses the transfer function for a mercury in glass thermometer and the procedure for determining transfer functions for processes.

1. Derive the output function y(t) for a second order system subjected to a (i) step response
(ii) impulse response for (a) underdamped, (b) critically damped and (c) overdamped
condition.
2. Explain second order systems with examples. Define time constant and damping
coefficient.
3. Write the standard process inputs used in the model with function and graph.
4. Find the transfer functions H2/Q and H3/Q for the three-tank system shown in Fig.
where H2, H3, and Q are deviation variables. Tank 1 and tank 2 are interacting.
For a unit-step change in q (i.e., Q = 1/ s), determine H3(0) and H3(∞).

5. Define Linearization. Derive the transfer function for outlet flow of the tank follows a
relation 𝑞0 = 𝐶ℎ1/2.
6. Explain interacting and non-interacting tanks systems with examples. Derive the
