About the Conference
The Global South encompassing a diverse group of nations spanning the continents of
Africa, South America, and South/Southeast Asia, has experienced unprecedented change
in the last few decades. The region has emerged from the shackles of colonisation to record
impressive economic growth, and has made incredible progress in technology and has
transformed into a global manufacturing and services hub. The rise of the Global South has
heralded a change in international power dynamics, enabling the region to challenge
previously established hierarchies.
Despite the remarkable growth story of the Global South, some deep rooted and worrying
structural issues remain unaddressed.
Firstly, precarity in infrastructure, persistent unemployment, and poor living conditions
still shackle economies of the Global South in varying degrees.
Secondly, growth itself has come at different times and with different intensities—while
some countries have shown an impressive acceleration in GDP, the growth rate of others
has remained stagnant.
Thirdly, even among the high-growth economic regions, questions around equality,
gender, and sustainability still persist.
This picture of sharp contrasts obfuscates the development trajectory of the region, and
requires closer scrutiny, analysis and discussion.

The Conference aims to:

Deepen the collective understanding of the distortions and complexities of the Global
South
Develop fresh perspectives on the challenges and the transformative potential of the
region.
Make meaningful comparisons between the nations of the Global South, as well as to
explore disparities within the countries of the Global South.
Propose integrated solutions and actionable policies straddling domains such as
economics, sociology, policymaking, international relations, governance and finance.
Foster networking and collaboration to expand further research and analysis on this
crucial region of the world.
