ASSIGNMENT 1
Observation of average wave height and wave period in offshore location A gives the following data:
Assuming that the observation data follows the Rayleigh distribution, determine significant wave
height and significant wave period.
Given the project site at Location B is oriented in the north-south direction. Determine the design
wave height and wave period in a water depth of 3 m at B based on the dominant wave direction.
State any assumption made.
Answers:-
Using the following formula,
With Hi are the observed wave heights and n=8, the number of directions.
ECW750
The direction with the maximum energy determines the dominant wave. Energy is proportional to H2.
The highest wave height (H=2.5m) occurs in the NE direction, so the dominant wave parameters are:
H=2.5 m
T=10 s
The design wave height in shallow water is limited by the depth, calculated as:
Hd = min ( H , 0.78 x d)
Table Q2 gives the tidal datum at Location B (wave length L = 64 m) where the shoreline is oriented in
the north-south direction with a uniform beach slope of 1:10, and the longshore bar is located at 50 m
seaward from the shoreline. During regular season, the incidence wave height of 2.5-m at the breaker
line is known to cause wave setup along the beach. When monsoon arrives, the north-easterly wind
which blows over a distance of 20 km often reaches up to 24 m/s (at 10 m elevation), causing
significant storm surge. Given the sea level rise is projected to be +2 mm/ year, and an offshore
breakwater is to be constructed at B with a design life of 20 years to provide sheltered recreational
water. Derive the design water level for the breakwater. Wave runup may be ignored assuming that
residual energy transmission to the lee side of the breakwater is negligible.

Answers:
Highest Astronomical Tide (HAT) is 5.2 m above chart datum. This is the highest tidal elevation.
ŋ s = 0.17 x 2.5
ŋ surge = 0.01 x U2 x F
gxd
where:
U=24 m/s, wind speed at 10 m height,
F=20,000 m, fetch length,
g=9.81 m/s2, gravitational acceleration,
d=depth at bar / beach slope = 50/10=5m
to get :
ECW750
ŋ surge = 2.35m
The projected sea level rise over the design life of 20 years is:
Ŋ SLR = rate of rise × design life
DWL = Maximum Tidal Level + Wave Setup + Storm Surge + Sea Level
DWL = 5.2 + 0.425 + 2.35 + 0.04
DWL = 8.015m
The Design Water Level (DWL) for the offshore breakwater is : 8.02m, with the assumptions that :
This ensures the breakwater is designed to withstand the maximum expected water level over its 20-year
design life.
