General Problem-Solving Strategies:

● Understand the Problem: Read it carefully! What information is given? What are
you asked to find? Restate the problem in your own words.
● Make a Plan: What math operations or concepts are needed? Can you draw a
diagram or create a table? Break the problem into smaller, manageable steps.
● Carry Out the Plan: Show your work! This helps you (and others) understand your
thinking and identify any errors. Work neatly and systematically.
● Check Your Answer: Does your answer make sense? Estimate the answer before
you start to see if your final answer is reasonable. Plug your answer back into the
original problem to verify it.

Example Problems and Notes by Topic:

1. Basic Arithmetic:

● Problem: A store sells apples for $0.50 each and oranges for $0.75 each. If you
buy 5 apples and 3 oranges, how much will you spend?
● Notes:
○ Multiplication: Used to find the cost of multiple items.
○ Addition: Used to find the total cost.
● Solution: (5 apples * $0.50/apple) + (3 oranges * $0.75/orange) = $2.50 + $2.25 =
$4.75

2. Algebra:

● Problem: Solve for x: 3x + 5 = 14

● Notes:

○ Isolate the variable: Use inverse operations to get x by itself on one side of
the equation.
○ Order of Operations: Remember PEMDAS/BODMAS (Parentheses/Brackets,
Exponents/Orders, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction).
● Solution:

○ Subtract 5 from both sides: 3x = 9

○ Divide both sides by 3: x = 3
● Problem: A rectangle has a length of 10 cm and a width of 5 cm. Find its area and
perimeter.

● Notes:
○ Area of a rectangle: Length * Width
○ Perimeter of a rectangle: 2 * (Length + Width)
● Solution:

○ Area: 10 cm * 5 cm = 50 cm²
○ Perimeter: 2 * (10 cm + 5 cm) = 30 cm

3. Geometry:

● Problem: Find the area of a circle with a radius of 7 cm. (Use π ≈ 3.14)
● Notes:
○ Area of a circle: πr² (where r is the radius)
● Solution: 3.14 * (7 cm)² = 3.14 * 49 cm² ≈ 153.86 cm²

4. Word Problems (General Tips):

● Identify Key Information: What are the knowns and unknowns?

● Define Variables: If using algebra, let variables represent the unknowns.
● Write an Equation: Translate the word problem into a mathematical equation.
● Solve the Equation: Use appropriate math techniques.
● Answer the Question: Make sure you've answered what the problem asked,
including units.

5. Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages:

● Notes: Know how to convert between these forms. Practice adding, subtracting,
multiplying, and dividing them.

6. Measurement:

● Notes: Be familiar with units of measurement (length, weight, volume, time). Know
how to convert between units.

7. Statistics and Probability:

● Notes: Understand basic statistical measures (mean, median, mode, range). Know
how to calculate simple probabilities.

Tips for Taking Math Notes:

● Write Neatly: Makes it easier to review later.

● Show All Your Work: Don't skip steps.
● Use Different Colors: Can help highlight important concepts or steps.
● Include Examples: Write down examples from class to illustrate the concepts.
● Review Regularly: The more you review, the better you'll understand the material.
● Ask Questions: If you're confused about something, ask your teacher or a
classmate for help.
