Good morning class! Good morning ma’am!

Okay, before we start our class,

may I ask that everyone to stand
and lets pray. (student 1 will lead the prayer)
Amen

Before you take your seats,

please pick up some pieces of
paper under your chair.
Thank you class!
Who is absent today class? None Ma’am
Okay, very good!

So how are you today class? We are doing great ma’am

That’s good to hear!

ELICIT Before we start to our new

lesson let us have first a recall
about measures of central
tendency.

Do you still remember the

measure of central tendency
when you are grade 7? Yes, ma’am

Ok! So how do we define

Central Tendency? Central Tendency is a descriptive
summary of dataset through a
single value that reflects the center
of the data distribution. Along with
the variability of a data ser, central
tendency is a branch of descriptive
statistics.

Very well said! You also

learned the Mean, Median and
Mode, right? Yes, ma’am

Again, what are they? Okay Mean or average represents the

Jerick sum of all values in a data set
divided by the total number of the
values.

Median is the middle value in a

data set that is arranged in
ascending order (from smallest
value to the largest value)

Mode is the most frequently

occurring value in a dataset. A
datasets may not have any mode at
all.

Vey well said! Well then it

seems that you already
understand the measure of
central tendency so let us
continue with our new lesson.
ENGAGE To begin with our new lesson,
let us have a simple activity

I want you to play this game by

group, group your selves and
each group must have 9
members, okay?

You are all familiar with this

game – 4 pics 1 word, right? Yes, ma’am

The mechanics are easy,

just use the scrambled letters
to have the right answer. The
group who will get the correct
answer will begiven 1 point.
The group that has the higher
points will get a price later
after the class session. Are
you ready? Yes, ma’am

Simple Activity – 4 Pics 1

Word.

All students will answer the

activity by group compose of 4
members each. They will guess the
shuffle words to gain points within
3 minutes

MREAUSE

PISTOIN
UQALE

WOLER

RETQURA

Okay, what words did you

encounter from the activity? The words are Measure, Position,
Divide, Equal, Lower, Quarter

EXPLORE What can you say about our

activity? The activity is fun and exciting
ma’am

What values and methods did

you employ to come up with
your answers? We use the power of teamwork and
collaboration so that we can
answer as fast as we can ma’am
Okay very good. Those words
are connected and part of our
lesson this morning which is all
about Measures of Position

EXPLAIN So, for this morning our lesson

is all about measures of
position: quartiles, deciles and
percentile

Before we start who wants to

read our learning objectives
today?

Yes, Krystal At the end of the lesson, the

learners will be able to:
1.Define quartile, decile and
percentile;
2.Calculate the measure of
position for quartile, decile and
percentile; and
3.Appreciate the importance of
finding the quartile, decile and
percentile in real life seating.

Let’s first define these terms

first.

What is measure? Any idea

class? Measure for me is all about an
amount or degree of something

Okay very good, according to

your textbook ,measure is a
standard unit used to express
the size, amount, or degree of
something

Okay how about position? Position for me sir is all about

taking an action of where you
belong. It gives us direction

A position class it is all

about arranging a particular
position that he/she belong

Now let’s talk about measure of

position
What is measures of position?
Any idea class? No idea ma’am

Measures of position are used to

describe the position of a data
value in relation to the other
data. The most frequent
measures of positions are
quartiles, deciles, and
percentiles

Now let’s proceed in the first

type of measures of position
which is the Quartiles

Who wants to read? Yes Lara QUARTILES are the score points
which divide a distribution into
four equal parts.
Thank you Lara!

Each set of data has three

quartiles.

a. First Quartile (Q1 is a

number such that at most one-
fourth or 25% of the data are
smaller in value than Q1, and at
most three-fourths or 75% are
larger. It is sometimes called the
lower quartile.

b. Second Quartile (Q2 is a

number such that one-half or
50% of the data are below and
above in value than Q2. Q2 is
obviously the median.

c. Third Quartile (Q3 is a

number such that at most three-
fourths or 75% of the data are
smaller in value than Q3, and at
most one-fourth or 25% are
larger. It is sometimes called the
upper quartile.

The difference between Q1 and

Q3 is called the interquartile
range.
Quartiles can be represented by
the diagram below when the
data is arranged in increasing
order.

a. 25% of the data has a value <

Q1
b. 50% of the data has a value <
Q2
c. 75% of the data has a value <
Q3

Now let’s proceed to Decile

Who want’s to read? Yes

Sammuel Deciles are the nine scores points
that divide a distribution into ten
equal parts

D1 is the score which has 10% of

the scores below it and 90% above
it.

D2 is the score which has 20% of

the scores below it and 80% above
it

D3 is the score which has 30% of

the scores below it and 70% above
it
:
:
:
:

D9 is the score which has 90% of

the scores below it and 10% above
it
Okay thank you Sammuel!
How about percentiles who
wants to read? Yes, Camelle PERCENTILES are the ninety-
nine score points which divide a
distribution into one hundred equal
parts, so that each part represents
the data set. It is used to
characterize values according to
the percentage below them.

P1 separates the lowest 1% from

the other 99%

P2 separates the lowest 2% from

the other 98%

P3 separates the lowest 3% from

the other 97%
:
:
:
:
P99 separates the lowest 99% from
the other 1%
Okay thank you Camelle!

Now let’s have our examples:

1.How many percent

corresponds to Q3 if you will
interpret it?

Answer : 75% of the data have

a value less than or equal to Q3

2. George is an IT expert in one

big company. His salary is in
the 8th decile. Should George
be glad about his salary or not?

Answer : 80% of the

employees receive a salary that
is less than or equal to his salary
and 20% of the employees
receive a salary that is greater
than his salary. George should
be pleased with his salary.

3. There are 11 data items.

2,4,5,6,6,7,8,9,9,10,11

The median or Q2 is the 6th item.

So Q2=7
The lower quartile is the 3rd
item. So Q1= 5
The upper quartile is the 9th
item. So Q3= 9
What do the information above
mean?

Answer:

• 25% of the data have a

value that is less than or
equal to 5
• 50% of the data have a
value that is less than or
equal to 7
• 75% of the data have a
value that is less than or
equal to 9

4. Below is the table showing

the ages of 15 students in
Eastern Pangasinan
Agricultural College

a. If the value of Q1 is 13,

describe the ages of the
students.
b. If D7 = 15, how many
students have age 15 and
below?
c. If 16 years old is the 75th
percentile of the ages of the 15
students, what does it mean?

Answer :
a. Since Q1 is 13, then there are
4 students whose age is less
than or equal to 13.
b. Since D7 is 15, then there are
11 students whose age is less
than or equal to 15.
c. It means that 75% of the
students are 16 years old and
below or 25% of the students
are16 years old and above

And that’s the end of our lesson

today

Did you understand, class? Yes, ma’am

Is there any questions? None, ma’am

ELABORATE Okay if there’s no question, lets

recall our topic today

What is our lesson today class? It’s all about measure of position:
Quartiles, Deciles and Percentiles
Very good!
What is Quartile? Quartiles are the scores points
which divide a distribution into
four equal parts

How about Decile class? Deciles are the nine score points
that divide a distribution into ten
equal parts

Lastly, what is percentile? Percentiles are the ninety-nine

score points which divide a
distribution into one hundred equal
parts, so that each part represents
the data set.

Okay very good I’m glad that

you listen carefully during our
discussion
EVALUATE Now let’s have an activity.
Bring out 1 whole sheet of
paper and answer the following.

Activity I: Check it Out!

Directions: Study each problem

and answer what is/are being
asked.
1. You are the third tallest
student in a group of 10. If you
are the third tallest student,
therefore 7 students are shorter
than you. It also means that
70% of the students are shorter
than you. On the other hand, if
you are the 7th tallest student in
a group of 10,what percent of
the students are shorter than
you?

2. Given a test in Statistics, the

75th percentile score is 20. What
does it mean? What is its
measure of position in relation
to the other data?

3.The 78th percentile means

78% are smaller than the given
value. Does making the 80th
percentile mean that you made
an 80% on test? Justify.

Activity II: Match Me!

Directions: Match Column A
with Column B.

A B
1. Q1 a. Median
2. Q2 b. Median of the lower half
3. Q3 c. median of the upper half
4. D5 d. D3
5. P30 e. P50
6. D1 f. D4
7. D2 g. P70
8. P40 h. P60
9. D7 i. P10
10. D6 j. P20
EXTEND Assignment:

Directions: Study each problem

and answer what is/are being
asked.

1.You are the 4th shortest

student in a group of 12. If you
are the 4th shortest, that means 8
students are taller than you.
What percent of the students are
taller than you? What percent
are shorter than you?

2.In a Math exam, the 60th

percentile score is 45. What
does this indicate about the
performance of students? What
is its measure of position in
relation to the other data?

3.The 90th percentile means that

90% of the scores are lower
than the given value. If a
student is in the 95th percentile
of their class, does that mean
they scored 95% on the test?
Justify your answer.
