Lesson Plan

Teacher : Youssef KAMAL School : Anas Bno Malik high school

Class/ Level : 2nd Bac Materials : Textbook, Board, worksheet
Textbook : Gateway to English 2
Unit 6: Humour Lesson : Conditional type 3
Focus : Grammar Time : 110 min
Integrated skills: writing
Objectives : By the end of this lesson Ss will be able to :
- Rewrite sentence using conditional type 3.

Stage / Activity Procedure

Time
-T. asks students to remind him of the conditional types they studied last year
Review -T. elicits the form /the use of the conditionals 0,1 and 2
10 min - T. hands out a sheet containing the form/ use/ examples of conditional 0,1,2 ( see appendix 1)
-Ss read the chart/ refresh their memory about the if clause and the main clause
Presentation -T: today we will study conditional type 3
15 min -T. writes the following sentence on the board :
- I didn’t pass the exam because I didn’t work harder.
-T. elicits that the sentence represents actions that happened in the past.
-T. writes on the board:
- If I had worked harder , I would have passed the exam.
-T. asks students to identify the main clause and the if clause.
Isolation T. draws students attention to the possibility of writing the sentence starting with the main
explanation clause:
- I would have passed the exam if I had worked harder.
(T draws ss’ attention to the difference in punctuation (the comma) between the two possibility )
-T. asks Ss to deduce the form of the main clause and the form of the if clause.
T. draws the following chart on the board:

- If + S+ Past perfect , + S+ (Would/could/might) have + Past participle.

- S+(Would/could/might) have + Past participle + if + S+ Past perfect
-T. elicits the use from students by going back to the example and asking the following
questions: -Is it a past or present situation (past)
-Is the result real? (imaginary)
So …
The use
-We use conditional type 3 to talk about past situations and their imaginary
hypothetical results ( actions that didn’t happen in the past)
- We use it to express regret and criticizing.

NB: when the original sentence (reality) is affirmative, you must change it to the negative
form and vise versa.
Concept
checking -Rewrite the following sentence using conditional type 3:
1- I didn’t play sports so I was fat
2- Barca lost the match because they didn’t play well.
Practice Matching Task 1: Activity C page 82
20 min
MCQ Task 2: T. hands out a worksheet ( appendix 2)
T. asks Ss to do Ex 1
Individual work / whole class correction

Production T. asks Ss to do Ex 2 ( worksheet)

10min Sentence -Rewrite the sentences using conditional type 3
formation

End of the - T asks Ss to copy down the semantic map in their copybooks
session 5 min
Homework Ex “D” page 82
Review of conditional types (zero, 1, and 2)
Type Form Use Example
Conditional If clause If + Simple present To talk about facts and If you open the faucet, water pours
type zero + general truths
Main clause S + simple present
Conditional If clause If + Simple present To talk about an action in -If you study, you will pass the exam
type 1 the future that is likely to
