1.1 OBJECTIVES
To learn about the components of the unit.
To measure the flow rate with the help of volumetric tank.

1.2 THEORY
To calculate the volumetric flow rate utilize a stopwatch to measure the time ( t ) needed
to increase the level in the volumetric tank from 20 to 30 or 30 to 40 liters.

1.3 EXPERIMENT APPARATUS AND SETUP

The unit features a fiberglass working surface with a recessed area for experiments,
including an integral weir tank and a stepped volumetric measuring tank for accurate
flow measurement. Water is discharged into a sump tank through a valve, and a
submersible pump delivers water to the outlet for experiments. The materials used
minimize corrosion, and the entire unit is portable.

1- Volumetric measuring tank with channel.

2- Remote sight gauge.
3- Sump tank.
4- Sliding valve.
5- Drain cock.
6- Submersible motor driven pump.
7- Water supply for accessories.
8- with pump.
9- Flow control.
10- Overflow pipe.
11- Discharge cap.
12- Water supply connection for accessories without pump.

1.4 EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE

1- We made sure that the water drain was closed
2- Set the stop watch to zero
3- Turn on the pump
4- We monitor the water until it reaches 20 liters and then we start the timer
5- When the water reaches 30 liters, the timer stops and we record how long it took to
reach this volume
6- We repeat it from 30 to 40 and from 40 to 50
1.5 PRECAUTIONS

For every experiment we do we must follow the safety rules given before the lab, in our
case here are the thing we prepared before the experiment:

• Always wear safety clothes like shoes, safety glasses and lab coat.
• We need to check the electrical connection before starting the experiment
• Read the manual before coming to the lab do not put your hand on the
machine while it's operating
• we need to make sure how to take the measurements accurately

1.6 OBSERVATIONS AND CALCULATIONS

V= V/ T

V (L) V (L) T (s) 𝑉̇ (L/s) Average 𝑉̇

(L/s)
1 10 - - - (0.198+0.186
2 20 10 50.27 0.198 +0.191) / 3
3 30 10 53.73 0.186
4 40 10 52.40 0.191 = 0.191 (L/s)

V (L) V (L) T (s) 𝑉̇ Average 𝑉̇

(L/s)
1 10 - - - (0.234+0.222
2 20 10 42.68 0.234 +0.229) / 3
3 30 10 44.99 0.222
4 40 10 43.45 0.229 = 0.228 (L/s)

V (L) V (L) T (s) 𝑉̇ Average 𝑉̇

(L/s)
1 10 - - - (0.411+0.374
2 20 10 24.29 0.411 +0.381) / 3
3 30 10 26.7 0.374
4 40 10 26.24 0.381 = 0.388 (L/s)
1.7 RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

For every cycle we increased the speed of the pump a little bit wich resulted in different
between the average readings

Average 𝑉̇ 1 = 0.191 (L/s)

Average 𝑉̇ 2 = 0.228 (L/s)
Average 𝑉̇ 3 = 0.388 (L/s)

1.8 CONCLUSION

In this experiment we learned one of the ways of how to measure the mass flowrate, we
needed to be precise when we take the readings to avoid the variation in results. The
change in flow rate was obvious as the result just proved it. As we increased the speed
of the pump the volume of the mass flowrate increased as well.
