Input Device
According to Collins English
Dictionary, 2024) is a piece of
computer equipment such as a
keyboard that enables you
to put information into a
computer. It’s a hardware
device that sends data to a
computer, allowing you to
interact with and control it.
Wherein a term that connects to a primary device, to provide user
input. Which includes mouse, keyboard, joystick, webcam,
microphones, etc. This serves to enable computer operators to
have control of the computer and send data such as text, images,
or sounds to the computer, while the keyboard will be the one to
feed text characters for word processing and enable the
computer user to perform specific control functions.
Below are more example and their uses

• Keyboard: The primary input device for entering text and

commands into a computer system. It typically consists of a set
of keys representing letters, numbers, symbols, and function
keys.
• Mouse: A pointing device used to move a cursor on a computer
screen and interact with graphical user interfaces by clicking,
dragging, and dropping objects.
• Joystick: Mainly used in gaming and flight simulation
applications, a joystick allows users to control the movement of
objects on the screen by tilting or moving the stick in different
directions.
• Scanner: Used to convert physical documents or images into
digital formats by scanning and digitizing them. Scanners are
commonly used for document archiving, image editing, and
optical character recognition (OCR) tasks.
• Light Pen: An input device that can detect light emitted by a
computer screen. It allows users to interact directly with the
screen by pointing at specific areas, commonly used in early
computer systems but now less prevalent due to advances in
touchscreens and other technologies.
• Microphone: Used to capture audio input, allowing users to
record sound, make voice commands, or participate in voice
communication over the internet.
• Digital Camera: Used to capture still images and videos in
digital format. Digital cameras are widely used for photography,
videography, and video conferencing applications.
Output Devices
An output device is a piece of hardware used to receive data
from the computer and convert it into a human-perceptible form. An
example of an output device is a set of speakers. They take the data
from the computer and turn it into an audible sound. This will all work
on a similar basis, but they’ll create different results depending on
what you’re inputting onto the computer and what the device can do.
Typing on a keyboard won’t make any audio come out of a speaker,
however, whatever you type will show up on your screen monitor.

This our some types of output devices and their functions:

• Monitor: Displays visual output from a computer, including text,

graphics, and video. Monitors come in various types such as LCD,
LED, and OLED, and they provide the user with a visual interface to
interact with the computer.
• Printer: Outputs digital documents or images onto paper or other
media. Printers come in different types including inkjet, laser, and
3D printers, and they are used for producing hard copies of
documents, photos, and three-dimensional objects.
• Speakers: Output audio from a computer or other audio sources.
Speakers can range from basic stereo speakers to high-fidelity
surround sound systems, providing users with auditory feedback,
music, and sound effects.
• Headphones: Similar to speakers but worn over the ears,
headphones provide audio output directly to the user without
disturbing others. They are commonly used for private listening,
gaming, communication, and immersive audio experiences.
• Projector: Projects visual content onto a large screen or surface.
Projectors are commonly used in presentations, home theaters,
classrooms, and conference rooms to display images, videos, and
slideshows.
• GPS (Global Positioning System): Receives signals from satellites
to determine the device's location on Earth. GPS devices are used
for navigation, mapping, tracking, and location-based services such
as finding directions and geotagging photos.
• Plotter: Outputs large-scale graphics or drawings onto paper or
other media. Plotters are commonly used in engineering,
architecture, and design for producing detailed diagrams,
blueprints, and technical illustrations.
• Braille Embosser: Outputs Braille characters onto paper or
specialized materials for visually impaired individuals. Braille
embossers convert digital text into raised dots, allowing blind users
to read tactile representations of written information.
• Haptic Devices: Provide tactile feedback to users through
vibrations, motions, or force. Haptic devices are used in virtual
reality (VR), gaming, simulation, and medical applications to
enhance user immersion and interaction.
• 3D Printer: Outputs three-dimensional objects by layering
materials such as plastic, metal, or resin. 3D printers are used in
prototyping, manufacturing, education, and various industries for
producing custom parts, models, and prototypes.
Input and output devices that can be
considered assistive technology
The most commonly used AT to assist people access a computer
include typing aids, alternative keyboards, alternative mouse options,
and alternative input options such as speech recognition software.

Typing aids are devices that allow individuals with disabilities to

access a standard keyboard, enabling them to use their abilities to
type text-related information. These aids include hand-strapped
typing aids, mouth sticks, head pointers, and key guards. Hand-
strapped typing aids are pencil-sized sticks with rubber tips that strap
around the palm area of the user's hand, providing a rigid point option
they can control with gross motor movement. Mouth sticks are similar
to hand-strapped aids but are easier to control due to the user's
disability. Head pointers are similar to mouth sticks but are strapped
to the user's head, causing discomfort and dependency. Key guards
are not used as a replacement for an inability to point with one finger.
They are pieces of plastic or wood with holes corresponding to each
key placed over a keyboard to help isolate each key, preventing
multiple same-time key hits and improving typing accuracy. Key
guards can be used with or without any of the other typing aids, and
are typically used by individuals with a fine motor disability who
cannot accurately target an individual key on a keyboard.
