SCIENCE STUDY GUIDE

1. What is the Periodic Table?

It’s a table in which the chemical elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic
number.

2. Who is the creator of the Periodic Table?

The creator of the Periodic Table is Dimitri Mendeleev.

3. What is the structure of the Periodic Table?

The Periodic Table is arranged in 7 rows and 18 columns, known as periods and groups
respectively.

4. How many elements does the periodic table has?

Currently, the Periodic Table has 118 known elements, and is widely regarded as one of
the most significant achievements in science.

5. Explain the characteristics of ‘Groups’ in the Periodic Table:

These, also known as families, run vertically. Elements in the same group share similar
chemical properties due to having the same number of valence electrons. For example,
the noble gasses in Group 18 have full electron shells. This makes them unreactive.

6. Explain the characteristics of ‘Periods’ in the Periodic Table:

These run horizontally. As you move across a period from left to right, each element
has one more proton and electron than the previous element. The properties of
elements change in a predictable way through each period.

7. What is the name of each group in the Periodic Table and where are they found?
 The 1st group of elements in periodic table is known as alkali metals.
 The 2nd group of elements is known as alkaline earth metals.
 Transition metals: found in the middle of the periodic table, between groups 2
and 13.
 The 16th group of elements is known as chalcogens.
 Group 17th of elements is known as halogens.
 Group 18th of elements is known as noble gases.
8. List the main groups of elements:
1. Alkali Metals
2. Halogens
3. Noble Gases
4. Alkali metals

9. Transition Metals

The elements in group 1 are known as alkali metals. They react rapidly (very fast) with water,
producing an alkaline solution and hydrogen gas. The metals become more reactive as you go
down the group.

10. Halogens

The elements in group 7 are known as halogens. Fluorine and chlorine are gases. Bromine is
one of only two liquid elements. Iodine is solid. As you go down the group the halogens
become less reactive.

11. Noble gases

The elements in group 18 are known as noble gases. They are very unreactive and exist as
individual atoms.

12. Transition Metals

The transition metals are elements which are found between groups 2 and 13. Well known
examples are iron, copper and gold. They are generally quite dense (heavy) and many form
brightly colored compounds.
