Task I (20 Marks)

Social media verification: Accessing sources and visual content

Social media has change journalist practice. Real time audience engagement has given rise to
crowdsourcing content, and even and even repeating task like verification can now be outsource to the
audience166. While journalist remain in essence, a discipline of verification 167, method of verifying content
and source require constant updating to reflect the impact of first changing digital technology, online
behavior and news gathering practice. For example, during the Arab spring, the concept of ‘open
verification’ -a process of public, collaborative, real-life verification – began to surface but this process
remains continuous because of the risk associated misinformation going viral in the course of attempting to
verify information step by step in a public forum (i.e. a reporter sharing unverified information with a view
of crowdsourcing the verification process)168.

Today, eyewitness account and visual content are amongst the most important and compelling tool a
journalist or news publisher can draw on to tell a high impact story. In a breaking news scenario, speed is a
critical factor in verifying information from social media169.

Journalism must b enable to navigate vast amount of information to get to sources, information and image
that matter. The rapid growth in the amount of visual content (photo, video, GIFs) uploaded to social
platform, is driven by three main factors:

 The proliferation of camera-enable smart and feature phones around the world
 Increase aces to inexpensive (and in some place free) mobile data
 The raise of global social network and social messaging platform on which anyone can publish
content and build an audience

a) Launch the word processor in your computer and type the text above.

 Use full text justification, a 12-point time new roman or a similar serif font, and a line
spacing of 1.5 for the paragraphs.
