CH 1 assignment 2

The document contains a series of mathematical assignments related to relations and functions, including proofs of invertibility, bijections, and properties of binary operations. Each question requires the student to demonstrate specific properties of functions, such as one-to-one and onto, and to find inverses where applicable. Additionally, the document explores commutativity and associativity of various binary operations.

the domain R – {0} is replaced by N ?
(Ans result is not true as for y ∈ 𝑹 we must have 1/y ∈ 𝑵 which is not true)

3. Consider f : R+ → [4, ∞) given by f(x) = x2 + 4. Show that f is invertible with the inverse f-1 of f given by
f-1 (y) = √𝑦 − 4, where R+ is the set of all non – negative real numbers.

√𝑦−6 − 1
4. Consider f : R+ → [−5, ∞) given by f(x) = 9x2 + 6x – 5. Show that f is invertible with f-1(y) = 3

√54+5𝑦 − 3
5. Consider f : R+ → [−9, ∞) given by f(x) = 5x2 + 6x – 9. Prove that f is invertible with f-1(y) = .
5

6. Let f : N → N be a function defined by f(x) = 4x2 + 12x + 15. Show that f : N → S where S is the range of
√𝑦−6 − 3
f is invertible. Find the inverse of f. (Ans f-1(y) = )
2

7. Let Y = {n2 : n ∈ 𝑵} ⊂ 𝑵 . Consider f : N → 𝑌 as f(n) = n2. Show that f is invertible. Find the inverse.
(Ans f-1(n) = √𝑛 )

8. Let f : W → W be defined as f(x) = x - 1, if x is odd and f(x) = x + 1 , if x is even. Show that f is invertible.
𝑥 − 1, 𝑥 𝑖𝑠 𝑜𝑑𝑑
Find the inverse of f where W is the set of all whole numbers. (Ans f(x) = { )
𝑥 + 1 , 𝑥 𝑖𝑠 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛
4𝑥+3
9. Show that the function f in A = R – {2/3} defined by f(x) = is 1-1 and onto. Hence find f-1
6𝑥−4
4𝑥+3
(Ans f-1(x) = 6𝑥−4
)

10. If f : R → R be the function defined by f(x) = 4x3 + 7 , then show that f is a bijection.

𝑛+1
, 𝑛 𝑖𝑠 𝑜𝑑𝑑
2
11. Let f : N → N be defined by f(n) = { 𝑛 ∀ 𝑛 ∈ 𝑵. Find whether the function f is bijective
, 𝑛 𝑖𝑠 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛
2
or not. (Ans f is not 1-1 as x1 = 1 , x2 = 2 , f is onto hence f is not bijective)

12. Is g = { (1,1), (2,3), (3,5), (4,7)} is a function? If g is described by g(x) = 𝑥 + 𝛽 , then what value should be
assigned to 𝛼 and 𝛽 ? (Ans yes, 𝛼 = 2, 𝛽 = −1 )

1
13. Let f : R → R be the function defined by f(x) = 2−cos 𝑥 ∀ 𝑥 ∈ 𝑹. Then find the range of f .( Ans [1/3 , 1] )
14. If * be binary operation on R by a*b = 1 + ab ∀ a,b ∈ 𝑹 , then prove that * is commutative but not
associative.

15. If S is the set of all rational numbers except 1 and * be defined on S by a*b = a + b – ab ∀ a,b ∈ 𝑆, then
prove that * is a binary operation and * is commutative as well as associative.

16. Consider the binary operations * : R X R → R and o : R X R → R defined as a*b = |𝑎 − 𝑏| and aob = a.
