Find the Sample Space of the following experiments.

Experiment Sample Space

1. Tossing a coin {H, T}
2. Picking a ball from a
bag containing yellow, {Yellow, Green, Red}
green and red balls
3. Tossing two coins {HH, HT, TH, TT}

4. Tossing three coins {HHH, HHT, HTH, THH,

HTT, THT, TTH, TTT}
Lesson 1
Exploring Random
Variables
Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, you are able to:
1. illustrate a random variables;
2. classify random variables as discrete
or continuous; and
3. find the possible values of a random
variables.
What is Sample Space?

Sample Space
➢ is the set of all possible
outcomes of an experiment.
What is a random variable?

A random variable is a function that

associates a real number to each
element in the sample space. It is a
variable whose values are determined
by chance.
Steps on how to determine the random variables on any
events or
experiments:
1. Determine the sample space. Assign letters that will represent
each outcome.
2. Count the number of the value of the random variable (capital
letter assigned).
In class Activity 1
Defective Cell Phones
Suppose three cell phones are tested at random. We
want to find out the number of defective cell phones that
occur. Thus, to each outcome in the sample space we
shall assign a value. These are 0, 1, 2, or 3. if there is no
defective cell phone, we assign the number 0; if there is 1
defective cell phone, we assign the number 1; if there
are two defective cell phones, we assign the number 2;
and 3, if there are three defective cell phones. The
number of defective cell phones in a random variable.
The possible values of this random variable are 0, 1, 2,
and 3.
Value of the Random Variable X
Possible Outcomes (number of defective cell phones)
NNN 0
NND 1
NDN 1
DNN 1
NDD 2
DND 2
DDN 2
DDD 3
So, the possible the values of the random
variable X are 0, 1, 2,and 3.
Activity 2
Tossing Three Coins

Suppose three coins are tossed. Let Y be

the random variable representing the
number of tails that occur. Find the values of
the random variable Y.
Value of the Random Variable Y
Possible Outcomes (number of tails)
TTT 3
TTH 2
THT 2
HTT 2
HHT 1
HTH 1
THH 1
HHH 0
So, the possible values of the random
variable X are 0, 1, 2,and 3.
Activity 3
Drawing Balls from an Urn

Two ball are drawn in succession

without replacement from an urn containing
5 red balls and 6 blue balls. Let Z be the
random variable representing the number of
blue balls. Find the values of the random
variable Z.
Steps Solution
1. Determine the sample Th e sample space for this experiment is:
space. Let B represent blue S ={RR, RB, BR, BB}
ball and R represent the red
ball.
2. Count the number of blue Possible
Value of the random Variable
ball in each outcome in the Y
Outcomes
sample space and assign (number of blue balls)
this number to this RR 0
outcome. RB 1
BR 1
BB 2

So, the possible values of the random variable Z

are 0, 1, and 2.
What are the two types of random variable?

Discrete random variable - the set of possible

outcomes is countable (finite) values.

Example:
➢ number of students present
➢ number of red marbles in a jar
➢ number of heads when flipping three coins
➢ students’ grade level
Continuous random variable
➢ a random variable that takes on values
on continuous scale.
➢ Represent measured data, such as
heights, weights, and temperatures.
Example:
➢height of students in class
➢weight of students in class
➢time it takes to get to school
➢distance traveled between classes
Group Activity

Four coins are tossed. Let H be the

random variable representing the
number of heads that occur. Find
the values of the random variable
H.
Value of the Random Variable H
Possible Outcomes (number of tails)
HHHH TTTT 3 3
HHHT HTTT 2 3
HHTH TTHT 2 3
HTHH THTT 2 3
THHH HTHT 1 3
HHTT THTH 1 3
TTHH TTHT 1 3
HTTH THHT 0 3
So, the possible the values of the random
variable H are 0, 1, 2,and 3.
Classify the following random variables as
discrete or continuous.
1. Height of a person 1. Continuous
2. Number of printing mistakes in a book 2. Discrete
3. Age of a person 3. Continuous
4. Number of road accidents in New Delhi 4. Discrete

region.
10. The amount of paint utilized in a building 10. Continuous
project
11. The number of dropout in a school 11. Discrete
district for a period of 10 years
12. The speed of car 12. Continuous
13. The number of female athletes 13. Discrete
