U4 Lab #1 Types of Chemical RXN Lab HChem 2122

The document outlines a lab procedure for an Honors Chemistry class focused on identifying and demonstrating different types of chemical reactions. It includes specific reactions to conduct, safety precautions, and instructions for recording observations and writing balanced chemical equations. Students are required to analyze the reactions and answer questions related to the evidence of chemical changes.

Unit 4 Lab #1: Types of Chemical Reactions Lab

Objectives: To demonstrate and identify the different types of chemical reactions; to observe whether a chemical
reaction has taken place; to use chemical equations to describe a chemical reaction

Safety: wear goggles, observe burner safety, handle glassware with care, dispose of chemicals as directed, wash hands after lab

General Procedure:
 Carefully conduct the following reactions according to the procedures outlined.
 Predict the products and write complete, balanced equations, showing physical states, for all reactions.
 Identify the type of reaction and the specific evidence that was observed as proof of a chemical reaction.

Reaction 1: Solid magnesium combines with oxygen gas to yield?

Procedure: Carefully grip a 1-cm piece of magnesium ribbon with tongs. Light a Bunsen burner and carefully place the magnesium
into the flame. Do not look directly at the metal as it burns. Observe what happens to the magnesium and record your observations.

Reaction 2: Solid ammonium carbonate when heated yields?

Procedure: Place a small scoop of solid ammonium carbonate into a test tube. Using a test tube holder, heat the test tube gently
over a Bunsen burner flame, directing the tube away from all people. Observe the reaction and then turn off the burner. Test the
acidity of a gas produced by holding a piece of moistened litmus paper at the mouth of the test tube. Record all observations.

Reaction 3: Solid magnesium reacts with aqueous hydrochloric acid to yield?

Procedure: Place 0.5 mL (approx. 10 drops) of 3 M HCl in a test tube. Add a small piece of magnesium metal. Place your thumb over
the mouth of the test tube. When the reaction appears to have ended, light a wood splint with a match and quickly test the collected
gas for flammability by holding the burning splint near the mouth of the test tube when you remove your thumb. Record all
observations.

Reaction 4: Solid aluminum reacts with aqueous copper (II) chloride to yield?
Procedure: Place 5 drops of 0.1 M CuCl2 in a well plate. Add a small piece of aluminum metal. Wait until you see a reaction. Record
your observations.

Reaction 5: Aqueous solutions of copper (II) chloride and potassium chromate react to yield?
Procedure: Place 5 drops of 0.1 M K2CrO4 in a clean well of a well plate and add 5 drops of 0.1 M CuCl2 to it. Record your
observations.

Reaction 6: Aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide and iron (III) nitrate react to yield?
Procedure: Place 5 drops of 3 M NaOH in a clean well of a well plate and add 5 drops of 0.2M Fe(NO3)3 to it. Record your
observations.

Reaction 7: Solid copper reacts with aqueous silver nitrate to yield?

Procedure: Place 5 drops of 0.1 M AgNO3 in a clean well of a well plate. Add a small piece of copper. Wait until you see a reaction.
Record your observations.

Reaction 8: Baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) when heated yields?

Procedure: Place 0.5cm of baking soda in the test tube. Light the Bunsen burner. Using test tube holder, hold test tube over the
flame. Point test tube away from people. Test for presence of a gas by lighting the end of a wood splint with a match and placing the
flame of the splint at the opening of the test tube. Record all observations.

Complete the chart on the next page:

For each reaction:
a. Write the balanced chemical equation, showing physical states.
b. Identify the type of chemical reaction that occurred.
c. Identify which specific evidence occurred as proof of a chemical reaction.
And answer the remaining analysis questions.

Analysis Questions:
1. What are the signs of a chemical reaction?

2. Extra tests were done for Reactions 2, 3, and 8. For each of these, state what you observed and what is the
significance (meaning) of these observations.
