Section A

Question 1 [42 marks]

Consider the bit-stream 1011100101; assuming the initial voltage is zero, draw the voltage
representation of this bit-stream for the following digital encoding schemes:

1.1. NRZ-L (3)

1.2. NRZ-I (3)
1.3. Manchester (3)
1.4. Differential Manchester (3)
1.5. Bi-polar AMI (3)

Question 2

2.1 What is delta modulation and how does it work? (5)

2.2 Transmitting digital data with discrete analog signals can be achieved using three (3) shift
mbnkeying techniques. NAME and BRIEFLY DESCRIBE these techniques. (6)
2.3 Distinguish between
a) Pulse code modulation (2)
b) delta modulation (2)
2.4 Briefly describe the following:
a) Manchester Digital Encoding Scheme (3)
b) Differential Manchester Digital Encoding Scheme (3)
c) The advantages and disadvantages of Manchester schemes (6)

Section B

Question 3 [28 marks]

3.1 To achieve a channel capacity of 1024Mbps under perfect conditions (i.e. no noise), how many
signalling levels would be needed for a 128MHz signal? SHOW ALL YOUR WORKING. (6)
3.2 You are given that the maximum reliable channel capacity (which has already taken noise into
account) is 166.67Mbps, with an SNR of 32. At what frequency can a signal achieve this
maximum channel capacity? SHOW ALL YOUR WORKING.
(6)
3.3 There are two possible routes that a signal S can travel on between the two great cities of
Starland and Southingbrough. The first route goes from Starland→Fayside →Angerford
→Southingbrough. The second route goes from Starland→Shadytown →Southingbrough. The
possible signal routes between these two cities have the following properties:

a) Starland→Fayside: A signal typically loses 0.333 of its power.

b) Fayside→Angerford: A signal typically loses 0.425 of its power.
c) Angerford→Southingbrough: A signal typically loses 0.125 of its power.
d) Starland→Shadytown: A signal typically loses 0.454 of its power.
e) Shadytown→Southingbrough: A signal typically loses none of its power.

The in-between towns have network equipment which aids in maintaining good network quality, and
includes signal-boosting equipment with the following properties:

a) Fayside: A signal booster that strengthens the signal by 25%.

b) Angerford: A signal booster that strengthens the signal by 16%.
c) Shadytown: A very old signal booster that originally strengthened the signal by 15%, but due
to faulty equipment, this booster now seems to deteriorate the signal by about 5%.

As an experienced network engineer, which of these two routes would you recommend to a service
provider you consult for? Support your answer by showing calculated evidence. (10)

3.4 Using the ASCII character code set (see Figure 2-28 in the prescribed textbook), translate each of
the following into characters.
3.4.1 1000001 1001001 1010011 (3)
3.4.2 0101000 1010010 0101001 (3)

SECTION C

Question 4 [30 marks]

4.1 Define and elaborate on the concept of signal bandwidth, discuss its relevance in signal
processing and communication systems, and analyse how signal bandwidth influences various
aspects of signal transmission and reception. (10)
4.2 Provide a thorough breakdown of the essential components inherent/ inbuilt in all signals,
explaining their respective roles and contributions to the overall signal structure, and analyse
how variations in these components can affect signal quality and performance. (10)
4.3 Discuss comprehensively the primary advantages digital signals possess over analog signals,
elucidating how these advantages contribute to improved signal reliability, flexibility, and
efficiency in various communication applications. (10)
