ASSIGNMENT 2

DUE DATE: MAY 19, 2024 @23:59

SECTION A - SHORT QUESTIONS

Question 1 [8]

An interface standard consists of four possible components. NAME and BRIEFLY

Describe these components.

Question 2 [8]

Explain the concept of Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and discuss its two basic forms.
Provide examples and discuss at least one advantage and disadvantage of each form.

Question 3 [6]

Describe the three terms that relate to duplexity using an example in each case.

Question 4 [11]

i. Give and explain the two main functions of the data link layer. (2)
ii. State and briefly describe the three different types of data link connections. (9)

Section B – ILLUSTRATIONS AND CALCULATIONS

Question 5 [9]

There are three mobile users – User X, User Y and User Z, who all share a common set of
frequencies using the Code Division Multiplexing technique. The unique codes for these
users are:

1
User X – 00001111

User Y – 01010101

User Z – 00110011

Mobile User X sends a binary ----+ + + +

Mobile User Y sends a binary + - + - + - + -

Mobile User Z sends a binary -- + + -- + +

The transmitted bits of information have been received by receiver R.

i. Determined the sum of the voltages of the received messages.

ii. Using this information, determine whether a binary 0 or a binary 1 was
transmitted by each of these users. SHOW ALL YOUR WORKING.

Question 6 [21]

i. Describe the concept of polling and differentiate the two types of polling
techniques used. (5)
ii. Terminals W, X, Y, and Z are connected to a mainframe computer. Only terminal
Z has data to transmit. With the aid of a diagram, show the sequence of
messages sent between the mainframe and the three terminals using roll-call
polling. (16)

Section C – DISCUSSION

Question 7 [15]
The choice of media type is a crucial consideration when building or upgrading a computer
network. IDENTIFY and BRIEFLY describe the five (5) main elements that should be taken
into account when choosing which media to use.

Question 8 [22]

i. Explain the idea of compression. (2)

ii. Name, and describe the two categories of the compression process. (6)
iii. Give two examples of compression techniques utilized in (ii) above. (4)

2
iv. In detail and using an appropriate example, discuss categorically how run-length
encoding works. (10)
