This question paper consists of three sections A, B and C.
Candidates are required to attempt all questions from Section A and all questions
EITHER from Section B OR Section C
Section A: Internal choice has been provided in two questions of two marks each, two
questions four marks each and two questions of six marks each.
Section B: Internal choice has been provided in one question of two marks and one question
of four marks.
All working, including rough work, should be done on the same sheet as, and adjacent to the rest
of the answer.
The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [ ].

SECTION A (65 Marks)

(a) A building contractor undertakes a building construction job. The probability that
there will be a construction worker’s strike is 0.65. If there is a strike and still
construction work will be completed on time, the probability is 0.32. The
construction work will be completed on time in absence of any strike has the
probability is 0.80.
Based on the above information answer the following questions:
(i) What is the probability that there will be no strike?
(ii) What is the probability that the construction job will be completed on time?
(iii) What is the probability that there is a strike and construction work is
completed in time?
(iv) If the construction job is completed on time, what is the probability of no
strike?

(b) A heavy machinery unit was installed in an industrial unit. This machine comprises
of three components. The machine functions properly if all of its three components
functions properly. Suppose three components are C1, C2 and C3. The probability
the first component C1 fails within installation of 1 year is 0.10; component C2
fails within installation of 1 year is 0.14 and component C3 fails within installation
of 1 year is 0.05.
Based on the above information answer the following questions:
(i) What is the probability that the machine fails due to failure of exactly one
component?
(ii) What is the probability that the machine fails due to failure of exactly two
components?

A school wants to award its students for the values of honesty, regularity and hard
work with a total cash award of ₹ 6000. Three times the award money for hard work
added to that given for honesty amounts to ₹ 11,000. The award money given for
honesty and hard work is double the one given for regularity.
(i) Form a set of simultaneous equations for the above information.
(ii) Solve the set of equations formed in (i) by matrix method.
(iii) Find the cash award for honesty, regularity and hard work.

(a) A metal box with a square base and vertical sides is to contain 1024 cm3. The
material for the top and bottom costs ₹ 2.50 per cm2. Find the least cost of the

(i) The average cost function associated with producing and marketing x units of an

(a) Find the profit maximising output level, given x = 200 – 10p and AC = 10 +
where x represents the units of output, p is the price per unit and AC is the
average cost.

(b) A company manufacturers wrist watches for which p = 1500 – 3x represents the
demand function, where p is the price per unit. Cost price involves initially a
fixed cost of ₹ 38,400 and a variable cost of ₹ 420 per watch. Find at what level
of production the company expects to recover its cost.

The two lines of regression are x + 2y – 5 = 0 and 2x + 3y – 8 = 0 and the variance is

(a) Two tailors A and B are paid ₹ 225 and ₹ 300 per day respectively. A can stitch 9 shirts and 6
pants while B can stitch 15 shirts and 6 pants per day. Form a linear programming problem to
minimize the labour cost to produce at least 90 shirts and 48 pants. Solve the problem
graphically.

(b) A company produces two different products. One of them needs 14 of an hour of assembly
work per unit, 18 of an hour in quality control work and Rs 1.2 in raw materials. The other
product requires 13 of an hour of assembly work per unit, 13 of an hour in quality control
work and Rs 0.9 in raw materials. Given the current availability of staff in the company, each
day there is at most a total of 90 hours available for assembly and 80 hours for quality control.
The first product described has a market value (sale price) of Rs 9 per unit and the second
product described has a market value (sale price) of Rs 8 per unit. In addition, the maximum
amount of daily sales for the first product is estimated to be 200 units, without there being a
maximum limit of daily sales for the second product. Formulate and solve graphically the
LPP and find the maximum profit.
