Learning Competency - distinguish a variable from a constant in an algebraic
expression.
I. LESSON OBJECTIVES
At the end of this lesson, the students are expected to:
a. define variable, constant, and other terms related to algebraic expressions;
b. sort and categorize algebraic expressions based on their components, such as terms, coefficients,
constants and variables; and
c. appreciate the importance of algebraic expression in real life situation.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Topic: ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION
Reference: Khan Academy. (2015, September 12). What are terms, factors, and coefficients in
algebraic expressions?6thgrade | Khan Academy. YouTube.

Material PowerPoint Presentation (PPT), cards, laptop
Time Frame: 45 minutes
III. LESSON PROPER
Preliminary Activities
a. Greetings
b. Opening Prayer
c. Review
1. How does your face look when someone asks you to show a happy expression?
2. What if someone asked you to give them an algebraic expression — what would you do?
d. Motivation. Jumbled Letters
1. Virabale – Variable
2. Tmer – Term
3. Cosntnat – Constant
4. Aglbera – Algebra
5. Epxersisno – Expression

A. ACTIVITY
Divide the students into three groups and ask them to sort the cards into the four labeled boxes
(variables, constants, coefficients, terms).
Numbers only 3, -5, 8
Letters only x, y, a
Algebraic terms 4x, -2y, 5a

B. ANALYSIS
1. How was the activity?
2. What are the patterns did you observe when you are sorting a card into the four labeled boxes?
3. How did the activity help you understand algebraic expressions?
B. ABSTRACTION
 Algebraic Expression - a constant, a variable, or a combination of variables and constant
involving a finite number of indicated fundamental operations (addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division, evolution or radicals, involution or exponents) in algebra.
 Variable – a symbol that represents an unknown value such as x,y, a, α, β, θ, etc.
 Constant – is a symbol with exactly one number or a fixed value in its replacement set. Any
number is a constant such as 7, 4, and 11. Pi or π is also a constant with an approximate value
of 3.14.
 Term – a distinct part of an algebraic expression separated by a plus or minus sign, such as 4x²,
3y, or 2 in the expression 4x² + 3y + 2.
 Numerical factor- a term is called its numerical coefficient.
 Literal Coefficient - variable factor of a term.
Examples of Algebraic Expression:
7, 2x, -3y+4, 4x-3yz,

C. APPLICATION
Activity: “Algebra in My Savings”
 Anna wants to buy school supplies that cost ₱500. She already has ₱100, and she saves ₱50 per week.
Write an algebraic expression to represent her total savings after w weeks. Then, determine how many
weeks she needs to save to afford the school supplies.

IV. ASSESSMENT
Direction: Identify and analyze the algebraic expression by classifying terms, variable, constant or numerical
coefficient.
