34. Read the source given below and answer the questions that follow:
There is an annual cycle of seasons by which we can understand the climate of India in a better
way. The weather experts have identified a cycle of four seasons in India namely , the Cold
Weather Season ,the Hot Weather Season , the Season of Advancing Monsoon and the Season
of Retreating Monsoon.
December, January and February are generally the months of cold weather throughout the
country. The temperature in north India is low. The winds in this season blow from land to sea,
hence , there are almost dry weather conditions in a large part of the country. A little rainfall
occurs in the north-western plains caused by the western cyclonic disturbances from the
Mediterranean sea.

35. In the beginning, Harsha was a devotee of Shiva and worshipped Shiva and Surya. Some

in contact with Hiuen-Tsang, there was a greater impact of Buddhism on him. He was very
tolerant and respectful towards all religions.
Vaishnavism and Shaivism were the most popular sets of Hinduism during this period.
Harsha used to organise a conference at Prayaga, Allahabad, the sangam of Ganga, Yamuna
and Saraswati, every five years. At this occasion, he used to give alms (dan) to about five
lakh needy and poor people of all religions.

36. The Gram Sabha is the general body of the village. All the men and women of the village

Gram Sabha not only elects the members of Gram Panchayat, but also elects the Pradhan or the
Head-man. The Pradhan is also known as the Sarpanch or Mukhiya. In the absence of Pradhan,
the Up- Pradhan, takes over the responsibilities of the Pradhan. He is also elected by the Gram
Sabha. Gram Sabha holds its meetings twice a year. It takes important decisions about the
welfare and the development of the village. These are later implemented by the Gram
Panchayat. Gram Sabha also approves the annual budget of the Gram Panchayat. In fact, Gram
Sabha is the best example of direct democracy in India.
