A Case Study on Using Technology for Interactive Learning:

Basis for Recommendation of Innovative Teaching with lCT

By:

Ma. Niña A. Paquibot

Introduction

In this 21st century, the term “technology” is an important issue in many fields including
education. This is because technology has become the knowledge transfer highway in most
countries. Technology integration nowadays has gone through innovations and transformed
our societies that has totally changed the way people think, work and live (Grabe, 2007). As
part of this, schools and other educational institutions which are supposed to prepare students
to live in “a knowledge society” need to consider ICT integration in their curriculum (Ghavifekr,
Afshari Amla Salleh, 2012).

Integration of Information, Communication, and Technology (ICT) in education refers to the

use of technology-based teaching that incorporates into daily classroom instructional process.
In conjunction with preparing students for the current digital era, teachers are seen as the key
players in using ICT in their daily classrooms. This is due to the capability of ICT in providing
dynamic and proactive teaching-learning environment (Arnseth & Hatlevik, 2012). While, the
aim of ICT integration is to improve and increase the quality, accessibility and cost-efficiency of
the delivery of instruction to students, it also refers to benefits from networking the learning
communities to face the challenges of current globalization

Computers and technology does not acts as a replacing tools for quality teachers but instead
they are considered as an add-on supplements needed for the better teaching and learning. The
need for ICT integration in education is crucial, because with the help of technology, teaching
and learning is not only happening in the school environment, but also can happen even if
teachers and students are physically in distance. However, ICT integration is not a one-step
learning process, but it is a continual process of learning that provides proactive teaching-
learning environment (Young, 2003). ICT provides the help and reciprocal supports for both
teachers and students where it involves effective learning with the help of the computers to
serve the purpose of learning aids (Jorge et al., 2003). This is due to that almost all ranges of
subjects’ starts from mathematics, science, languages, arts and humanistic and other major
fields can be learned more effectively through technology-based tools and equipment. ICT can
be used in various ways where it helps both teachers and students to learn about their
respective subject areas. A technology- based teaching and learning offers various interesting
ways which includes educational videos, stimulation, storage of data, the usage of databases,
mind-mapping, guided discovery, brainstorming, music, World Wide Web (www) that will make
the learning process more fulfilling and meaningful (Finger & Trinidad, 2002).

As the world become increasingly supported by ICT, teaching and learning will not be the same
as before. The use of the rich and exciting opportunities offered by the new technologies in
education to reach our training goal and mission is crucial. Currently, there is still a large
knowledge gap in existing literature about how interactive technology affects education in
schools. Therefore, the aim of this case study is to provide better understanding and
appreciation of the role of ICT in teaching and learning system.

Case Evaluation
The researcher undertook the following systematic procedures on assessing the case or
situation:

1. The researcher chooses two teachers from Grade 9 level and a Grade 9 learners in a
particular section as the respondents of the study. The entire class were observed upon the
discussion of the two different teachers with their varied method of teaching to analyze and
interpret the effectiveness of the teaching method being use base on the number of responses
of the Grade 9 learners.

2. One teacher uses technology-based instructional materials such as PowerPoint presentation

and educational videos while the other teacher uses traditional-based instructional materials
such as blackboard and textbooks in discussing the lessons.

3. Analyzation and interpretations were made on the learner’s number of responses after
observing and comparing the two different methods of teaching.

Solutions

In consideration of the assessment on the situation in this case study, the researcher proposed
the following solutions and suggestions to address the situation:

1. Technology-based teaching and learning should be serve as a medium of instructions in every

class discussion.

2. Schools should provide opportunities for teachers in enriching their experiences and learn
ICT skills. This can be done by giving trainings, seminars, availability of resources and materials
to the teacher that will influence their breadth of experience towards technology-based
teaching.

3. School administrators should provide a set of policy, and a vision on education systems in
integrating ICT into teaching and learning process.

4. School administrators should provide the necessary materials and equipments in

administering a technology-based teaching for the betterment of daily instructional
presentations.

Implementations
The similarities and differences on the responses of the subjects of the study therefore provide
essential data on the current issues and considerations about ICT use, especially in a public
educational institution where technology-mediated approach in language instruction is yet to
be fully implemented due to certain constraints. Hence, the following implications are
presented.

Encouraging school administrators to promote the integration of technology-based method of

teaching in classrooms is beneficial. By incorporating technology-based method of teaching
such as PowerPoint as a teaching tool, educators can effectively discuss complex topics, deliver
clear instructions, and engage students through interactive exercises. To maximize the impact
of this approach, it's crucial to provide teachers with comprehensive training in technology-
based instructional materials to creating compelling PowerPoint presentations. This training
should focus not only on structuring content logically but also on designing visually appealing
slides that capture students' attention and facilitate comprehension. By conducting orientation
workshops for teachers before the school year begins, schools can empower educators in
technology-based teaching effectively. This early preparation ensures that teachers are
confident in utilizing this tool, leading to higher-quality presentations throughout the academic
year. It's essential also for school administrators to ensure that they're adequately equipped to
facilitate technology-based teaching, as it has the potential to significantly enhance the quality
of daily instructional presentations. By providing the necessary materials and equipment, such
as up-to-date computers, interactive displays, educational software, and high-speed internet
access, educators can create engaging and interactive learning experiences that cater to the
diverse needs of students. Implementing this enhancement in teaching can address
weaknesses in traditional instructional methods while simultaneously fostering both
formalization and improvisation in the classroom foster a more responsive classroom
environment, benefiting the learners.

Conclusions

This research uncovers the essential role of information and communication technology (ICT) in
education within a developing country such as the Philippines. It highlights how ICT allows
teachers to go beyond the constraints of traditional textbooks, enabling them to innovate using
technology-based instructional materials like PowerPoint presentations. The integration of ICT
in classroom needs serious consideration in order to increase the competency of the country’s
education system. In order to enhance the use of ICT in classroom, the government needs to
improve and change the teachers’ belief about the integration of ICT in classroom. This,
preparations of a technology-based teaching and learning should have proper implementation
and supports by the school top management.

In addition, the needs for teachers to be literate and have good skills and knowledge in using
ICT to improve their teaching methods and approach is desired to promote effective learning as
well as to meet the demand of the 21st century teaching skills. With the development of
technology, there are more and more technological products for educational purposes. A
variety of teaching aids and technology products provide teachers with more choices in
teaching styles. However, there is also an insufficiency of ICT resources, such as the lack
number of computers and the lack of Internet access prevents the successful incorporation of
information and communication technology (ICT) should be given solutions.

Finally, this study needs further investigation to justify and validate conclusions made. Hence,
suggestions for further research are highly encouraged. Having more research participants for
the same study would strengthen data presented about the technology-based method of
teaching towards the usage of ICT.
