E and Logs Questions - A Level Maths Edexcel
E and Logs Questions - A Level Maths Edexcel
Information
A booklet ‘Mathematical Formulae and Statistical Tables’ is provided.
There are 11 questions in this question paper. The total mark for this paper is 101.
The marks for each question are shown in brackets – use this as a guide as to how much time to
spend on each question.
Calculators must not be used for questions marked with a * sign.
Advice
Read each question carefully before you start to answer it.
Try to answer every question.
Check your answers if you have time at the end.
If you change your mind about an answer, cross it out and put your new answer and any working
underneath.

3. Given that
f(x) = 2ex – 5, x ℝ,
(i) y = f (x),
(ii) y = |f (x)|.

4. The functions f and g are defined by
f: x ex + 2, x ℝ,
g:x ln x, x > 0.
(a) State the range of f.
(1)
(b) Find fg(x), giving your answer in its simplest form.
(2)
(c) Find the exact value of x for which f(2x + 3) = 6.
(4)
(d) Find f −1, the inverse function of f, stating its domain.
(3)
(e) On the same axes sketch the curves with equation y = f(x) and y = f−1(x), giving the
coordinates of all the points where the curves cross the axes.

6. The area, A mm2, of a bacterial culture growing in milk, t hours after midday, is given by
A = 20e1.5t, t 0.
7. Water is being heated in an electric kettle. The temperature, °C, of the water t seconds after
the kettle is switched on, is modelled by the equation
= 120 – 100e–t, 0 t T.
Given that the temperature of the water in the kettle is 70 °C when t = 40,
ln a
(b) find the exact value of , giving your answer in the form b , where a and b are
integers.
(4)
When t = T, the temperature of the water reaches 100 °C and the kettle switches off.

10. The value of Bob’s car can be calculated from the formula
V = 17000e−0.25t + 2000e−0.5t + 500.
where V is the value of the car in pounds (£) and t is the age in years.

11. The amount of an antibiotic in the bloodstream, from a given dose, is modelled by the
formula
x = De–0.2t,
where x is the amount of the antibiotic in the bloodstream in milligrams, D is the dose given
in milligrams and t is the time in hours after the antibiotic has been given.
(a) Use the model to find the amount of the antibiotic in the bloodstream 4 hours after the
dose is given. Give your answer in mg to 3 decimal places.
(2)
A second dose of 15 mg is given 5 hours after the first dose has been given. Using the same
model for the second dose,
(b) show that the total amount of the antibiotic in the bloodstream 2 hours after the second
dose is given is 13.754 mg to 3 decimal places.
(2)
No more doses of the antibiotic are given. At time T hours after the second dose is given, the
total amount of the antibiotic in the bloodstream is 7.5 mg.
