Math Assignment Unit 1

Question 1: Job Placement Sets

Let A be the set of people who got jobs in the IT sector, and B be the set of
people who got jobs. Describe the people in each of the following sets:
(a) A ∩ B (Intersection of A and B): This set represents people who got jobs in
the IT sector and also got jobs in general. In other words, individuals who got
jobs specifically in the IT sector.

(b) A ∪ B (Union of A and B): This set includes people who either got jobs in
the IT sector or got jobs in general. It encompasses everyone who got employed,
whether in the IT sector or other fields.
Math Assignment Unit 1
(c) A − B (Difference of A and B): This set comprises individuals who got jobs
in the IT sector but did not get jobs in general. These are individuals exclusively
employed in the IT sector.

(d) B − A (Difference of B and A): This set consists of people who got jobs in
general but not in the IT sector. They are employed outside the IT sector.

Question 2: Residence and Property Sets

Let A be the set of people living in the USA, and B be the set of people having a
house in Canada. Express each of the following sets in terms of A and B using
set operations:
(a) People living in the USA and having a house in Canada: A ∩ B
represents individuals who both live in the USA and have a house in Canada.
(b) People living in the USA who do not have a house in Canada: A - B
signifies individuals living in the USA but without a house in Canada.
Math Assignment Unit 1
(c) People who either live in the USA or have a house in Canada: A ∪ B
covers individuals who either reside in the USA or own a house in Canada, or
both.

Canada: (A' ∪ B') denotes individuals who are either non-residents of the USA
(d) People who are either non-US residents or do not own a house in

or do not own a house in Canada, or both.

Question 3: Employee Benefits in an IT Company

To solve this problem, we can use the principle of inclusion and exclusion. Let's
denote the sets as follows:
 Let A be the set of employees who take the cab privilege.
 Let B be the set of employees who take the breakfast privilege.
Now, we are given the following information:
 ∣A∣ = 750 (number of employees taking the cab privilege)
 ∣B∣ = 900 (number of employees taking the breakfast privilege)
 ∣A∩B∣ = 530 (number of employees taking both privileges)
 ∣A′∩B′∣ = 60 (number of employees not taking any benefits)
Math Assignment Unit 1
We want to find the total number of employees in the company (∣U∣), where U is
the universal set of all employees.
The principle of inclusion and exclusion states:
|A∪B∣ = ∣A∣ + ∣B∣ − ∣A∩B∣
Now, let's use this formula to find the number of employees who take at least
one of the privileges:
|A∪B∣ = ∣A∣ + ∣B∣ − ∣A∩B∣
∣A∪B∣ = 750 + 900 − 530
∣A∪B∣ = 1120
This represents the number of employees who take at least one of the privileges.
Now, to find the total number of employees in the company (∣U∣), we can use:
|U∣ = ∣A∪B∣ + ∣A′∩B′∣
∣U∣ = 1120 + 60
∣U∣ = 1180
So, there are 1180 employees working in the company.
