The Basic Input Output System (BIOS) is essential software stored on the motherboard that runs first when a computer is powered on, performing tasks such as hardware checks and loading the operating system. It also allows for hardware configuration changes and can enhance security through password protection. Common functionalities include changing the boot order, loading defaults, and removing BIOS passwords.

WEEK 4

Basic Input Output System (BIOS)

Basic Input and Output System

❑ Usually referred to as BIOS.

❑ Software stored on a small memory chip on the motherboard.

❑ The first program that runs when you turn on your computer.

Importance/Purposes of BIOS

1. BIOS enables computers to perform certain operations as soon as they are turned on.

2. Ensuring that the operating system is correctly loaded into memory.

3. Perform the Power On Self Test.

POST

▪ the BIOS checks the computer's hardware in order to ensure that it is able to complete the startup
process. If the POST is completed successfully, the system usually emits a beep. If the test fails,
however, the system generally emits a series of beeps. You can use the number, duration and pattern
of these beeps

▪ to identify the cause of the test failure.

BOOTSTRAP LOADER

▪ BIOS attempts to load the operating system through a program. It is designed to locate any available
operating systems; if a legitimate OS is found, it is loaded into memory. BIOS drivers are also loaded at
this point.

4. It designed to give the computer basic control over hardware devices such as mice, keyboards,
network hardware and storage devices.

5. The BIOS can also play a role in computer security.

Most BIOS software versions have the option to password-protect the boot process, protect the boot
process, which means that you must enter a password before any BIOS activity can take place.

6. It is the first software to take control of your computer when you turn it on.

The BIOS software itself generally resides on a Read-Only Memory or ROM, or a flash memory chip
attached to your computer's motherboard. The location of the BIOS software on the chip is important,
If the BIOS was not always located in the same place on the same chip, your computer's
microprocessor would not know where to locate it, and the boot process could not take place.

How to Use BIOS

❑ BIOS supports several hardware configuration options that can be changed through the BIOS Setup
Utility.

Saving these changes and restarting the computer applies the changes to the BIOS and alters the way
BIOS instructs the hardware to function.

Here are some common things you can do in most BIOS systems:

1. Change the Boot Order

Why Change the Boot Order?

❑ There are several scenarios where it's necessary to change the boot order, like when launching some
data destruction tools and bootable antivirus programs, as well as when installing an operating system.

❑ The BIOS setup utility is where you change boot order settings.

2. Load BIOS Setup Defaults

❑ One reason to clear CMOS is to help troubleshoot or solve certain computer

problems or hardware compatibility

issues. Many times, a simple BIOS reset is all you need to get a seemingly dead PC back up and
running.

3. Remove a BIOS Password

❑ For laptop users, a BIOS password is an excellent way of ensuring that other people don't modify
your system settings or change or delete various passwords. However, if you use your laptop primarily
at home or in another area where the security of your notebook or its data is not a major concern,
disabling or removing the password may make your laptop easier to use. This is especially true if you
must enter a BIOS or Supervisor password to access you must enter a BIOS or Supervisor password to
access the operating system on your laptop.
