Quadratic Equation in two variables

Quadratic Equation in One Variable:

General Form of a Quadratic Equation:

where,
is the coefficient (number in front) of the term
is coefficient (number in front) of the x term
is the constant term (number on its own)

Solution of Quadratic Equations:

What does solving an equation mean?

→ It means find the values of
→ No. of solutions= Power of equation
→ Since quadratic equation has power 2 so it will have 2 solutions or
answers
→ The values are called the roots of the equation.

Methods of solving Quadratic Equations:

Equations Page 1
Methods of solving Quadratic Equations:
a) Using Factorization
b) Using Quadratic Formula
c) Completing the square method
d) Using Graph

To solve a quadratic equation it must equal to 0.

Make sure the quadratic equation is in the general form.

Example 1:

Solve the quadratic equation

Solution:

a) Using Factorization

Either, or

b) Using Quadratic Formula

Here,

Equations Page 2
Put the values in Quadratic Formula

c) Completing the square method

Step 1: Shift constant on the R.H.S

Step 2: Take the coefficient of middle term and find the half of that value
then take its square

Equations Page 3
Step 3: Add the result on both sides of quadratic equation

Taking square root on both sides

d) Using Graph

The solutions are shown where the graph cuts the horizontal

Simultaneous Equations:

Simultaneous equations are two or more algebraic equations that

share variables e.g. and .
They are called simultaneous equations because the equations are
solved at the same time.

For example, below are some simultaneous equations:

i) 2x + 4y = 14
x y
Equations Page 6
x y

ii) 6a + b = 18
4a + b = 14

iii) 3h + 2i = 8
h i

Solution of Simultaneous Equations:

There are two sorts of simultaneous equations you will need to solve:
• Linear Simultaneous Equations
• Quadratic Simultaneous Equations

→ No. of unknowns decides how many equations you need in order to

find the solution.
→ For example: If you have two unknowns you need 2 equations and if
you have 3 unknowns you need 3 equations and so on.

How to find the solution of simultaneous equations graphically

→ Plot the equations on the graph. The point of intersection will give
you the solution of the simultaneous equations.

From the graph

Solution of Linear Simultaneous Equations:

Methods:
1) Elimination
2) Substitution

Example 1: Solving simultaneous equations by elimination (addition)

Solve:

Solution:
Equations Page 8
Solution:
By adding the two equations together we can eliminate the
variable y.

We know so we can substitute this value into either of our

original equations

Put the value in eq (1), we get

(1)
2(3)+4y=14

Example 2: Solving simultaneous equations by elimination

(subtraction)
Equations Page 9
(subtraction)

Solve:

Solution:
By subtracting the two equations we can eliminate the variable b.

We know so we can substitute this value into either of our

original equations

Put the value in eq (1), we get

(1)
6(2)+b=18

Example 3: Solving simultaneous equations by elimination (different
coefficients)

Solve:

Solution:

This is because neither of the coefficients of or are the same.

So our first step in eliminating one of the variables is to make either

coefficients of or the same.
