Phrase

•A phrase in English grammar is a group of


words that work together as a unit but do
not form a complete sentence because
they lack a subject and a predicate.
Phrases can serve as parts of a sentence
and function as nouns, verbs, adjectives,
or adverbs.
Noun Phrase

•Definition: A phrase that acts as a noun in a sentence.


It can serve as a subject, object, or complement .

•Structure: Noun + Determiners/Adjectives/Modifiers.


•Examples:
•Subject: The bright morning sun lifted everyone's spirits.
•Object: She adopted a stray dog from the shelter.
•Complement: The winner is the boy in the red cap.
2. Verb Phrase

• A phrase consisting of a verb and its auxiliaries or modifiers.


• Structure: Main verb + helping verbs or adverbs.
• Example:
• She is running fast. (The verb phrase shows the action.)
Adjective Phrase

• A group of words that describe a noun or pronoun.


• Structure: An adjective along with its complements or modifiers.
• Example:
• The car with the red stripes is mine. (The adjective phrase describes
"car.")
4. Adverb Phrase

• A group of words that modify a verb, adjective, or another adverb.


• Structure: An adverb with modifiers or complements.
• Example:
• He sings with great enthusiasm. (The adverb phrase explains "how" he
sings.)
5. Prepositional Phrase

• A group of words beginning with a preposition and ending with a


noun or pronoun.
• Structure: Preposition + Object + Modifiers.
• Example:
• The cat is hiding under the table. (The prepositional phrase tells
"where.")
6. Infinitive Phrase

• A phrase that begins with "to" followed by the base form of a verb.
• Structure: To + Verb + Objects/Modifiers.
• Example:
• She likes to read mystery novels. (The infinitive phrase acts as the object
of "likes.")

• Noun: To learn a new language is a rewarding challenge.


• Adjective: She is the person to watch in the competition.
• Adverb: He worked hard to improve his skills.
7. Gerund Phrase

• A phrase that starts with a verb ending in "-ing" and functions as a


noun.
• Structure: Verb (-ing) + Objects/Modifiers.
• Example:
• Swimming in the ocean is refreshing. (The gerund phrase acts as the
subject.)
• Subject: Playing guitar relaxes her.
• Object: He enjoys reading mystery novels.
• Complement: Her hobby is collecting rare stamps.
Participial Phrase

• A phrase that starts with a present or past participle and acts as an


adjective.
• Structure: Participle + Objects/Modifiers.
• Example:
• The boy, shouting with joy, won the race. (The participial phrase describes the
boy.)
• Present participle: The child, crying loudly, was comforted by his
mother.
• Past participle: The window, broken by the storm, was repaired
immediately.
• Descriptive: She picked the flowers blooming in the garden.
