1-Relations-and-Functions

The document outlines the concepts of relations and functions, defining a relation as a set of ordered pairs and a function as a relation where each domain element corresponds to exactly one range element. It discusses various representations of relations and functions, including ordered pairs, tables, mapping diagrams, graphs, and equations, and introduces the Vertical Line Test for determining if a graph represents a function. The lesson aims to help learners apply these concepts to real-life situations and solve related problems.

Relations and Functions

Jessie O. Alde

Lesson Objective:
At the end of the lesson, the learner is able to
represent real life situations using functions,
including piecewise functions, and solve problems
involving functions.
RELATION
Is a set of ordered pairs (𝑥, 𝑦).
{ 1,2 , 2,4 , 2,6 , 4, −1 }

FUNCTION
Is a relation in which each element of the domain
corresponds to exactly one element of the range.
{ 1,2 , 2,4 , 3,6 , 4,8 }
Which of the following relations are Functions?
𝑓 = { 1,2 , 4,4 , 3,6 , −4,8 }
𝑔 = { 1,3 , 1,4 , 2,5 , 4,8 , 2,7 }
ℎ = { −4,3 , 2,6 , 4,9 }
𝑦 = { 9,3 , 2,3 , 3,9 , (5, −2)}
𝑧 = { 0, −3 , 12,6 , −3,9 , (5,11)}
Relations and Functions can be represented in different
ways:
1 ordered pairs
2 table of values

The Vertical Line Test

A graph represents a function if and only if each vertical
line intersects the graph at most once.
