CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Permanent markers play a vital role in our daily life. Students, office workers, and lots

of professionals uses marker to write and to share their ideas. Commercial marker inks

commonly contain harmful and toxic chemicals that can cause harm to people. Synthetic ink is

made primarily from fossil fuels and other harmful chemicals that can find their way back into

the environment. The process of making them involves solvents that release gasses known as

volatile organic compounds (VOC) that are harmful to humans. (Chew, 2018)

Taro (Colocasia Esculenta) plants, also called "gabi", is commonly known as an edible

plant used in many cuisines around the world. Taro stem, on the other hand, is considered as

an agricultural waste, as people don't know what to do with the taro stem. But it has a potential

to be used in numerous applications, just like making it into an alternative marker ink.

This study aims to explore the efficacy and the effectivity of taro stem extract as a

natural, eco-friendly, and harmless alternative marker ink. This research study aims to

contribute a non-toxic marker ink in ink manufacturing industry, probably offering a usable

substitute for regular synthetic inks.
