Tutorial 2: (Planar kinematics of rigid bodies)

Name Class
Force and acceleration:
Question 1: The drum truck supports the 600-1b drum that has a center of gravity
at G. If the operator pushes it forward with a horizontal force of 20 1b, determine
the acceleration of the truck and the normal reactions at each of the four wheels.
Neglect the mass of the four wheels.

Question 2: The thin plate ABCD has a mass of 8 kg and is held in the position shown
by the wire BH and two links AE and DF. Neglecting the mass of the links, determine
immediately after wire BH has been cut (a) the acceleration of the plate,
(b) the force in each link.

Question 3: At the instant shown, link CD rotates with an angular velocity of

ω= 8 rad/s. If link CD is subjected to a couple moment of M = 650 1b •ft.
determine the force developed in link AB and the angular acceleration of the
links at this instant. Neglect the weight of the links and the platform. The crate
weighs 150 1b and is fully secured on the platform.

Question 4: Disk A has a mass of 6 kg and an initial angular velocity of 360

rpm clockwise; disk B a mass of 3 kg and is initially at rest, The disks are
brought together by applying a horizontal force of magnitude 20 N to the axle
of disk A. Knowing that 𝜇𝑘 = 0.15 between the disks and neglecting bearing
friction. determine (a) the angular acceleration of each disk, (b) the final
angular velocity of each disk.

Question 5: The uniform 30-kg slender rod is being pulled by the cord that passes
over the small smooth peg at A. If the rod has a counterclockwise angular velocity
of 6 rad/s at the instant shown, determine the tangential and normal components
of reaction at the pin O and the angular acceleration of the rod.

Question 6: A drum with a 200 mm radius is attached to a disk with a radius of 150 mm.
The disk and drum have a combined mass of 5 kg and a combined radius of gyration of
120 mm and are suspended by two cords. Knowing that TA 35 N and TB 25 N, determine
the accelerations of points A and B on the cords.

Work and energy

Question 7: The 50-kg gear has a radius of gyration of 125 mm about its center
of mass O. If gear rack B is stationary, while the 25-kg gear rack C is subjected
to a horizontal force of P = 150 N, determine the speed of C after the gear's
center O has moved to the right a distance of 0.3 m, starting from rest.

Question 8: The uniform 50-kg slender rod is at rest in the position shown when
P = 600 N is applied. Determine the angular velocity of the rod when the rod
reaches the vertical position.

Question 9: The motion of the uniform rod AB is guided by small wheels of

negligible mass that rolls on the surface shown. If the rod is released from rest
when θ = 0, determine the velocities of A and B when θ=30˚

Impulse and momentum

Question 10: If rod OA of negligible mass is subjected to the couple moment
M = 9 N •m . Determine the angular velocity of the 10-kg inner gear t = 5 s after
it starts from rest. "The gear has a radius of gyration about its mass center of
ka = 100 mm. and it rolls on the fixed outer gear. Motion occurs in the horizontal
plane.

Question 11: The reel has a weight of 150 1b and a radius of gyration about
its center of gravity of kG =1.25 ft. If it is subjected to a torque of M = 25 1b • ft,
and starts from rest when the torque is applied, determine its angular velocity
in 3 seconds. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the reel and the
horizontal plane is µk= 0.15.
