Assignment 1 MAS291

The document outlines an assignment with five problems related to probability theory, including scenarios involving married couples watching a television show, a video game player facing opponents, municipal bond ratings, online service access, and flaws in automobile panels. Each problem includes specific questions requiring calculations of probabilities based on given data. The assignment is due on October 2, 2025.

Assignment 1

Deadline: Monday, 10/2/2025

Problem 1. 1.5 pt The probability that a married man watches a certain
television show is 0.4 and the probability that a married woman watches the
show is 0.5. The probability that a man watches the show, given that his
wife does, is 0.7. Find the probability that

a) a married couple watches the show,

b) a wife watches the show given that her husband does,

c) at least 1 person of a married couple will watch the show.

Problem 2. 2 pt
A player of a video game is confronted with a series of four opponents and
an 80% probability of defeating each opponent. Assume that the results
from opponents are independent (and that when the player is defeated by an
opponent the game ends).

a) What is the probability that a player defeats all four opponents in a

game?

b) What is the probability that a player defeats at least two opponents in

a game?

c) If the game is played three times, what is the probability that the player
defeats all four opponents at least once?

Problem 3. 2 pt
A municipal bond service has three rating categories (A, B, and C). Suppose
that in the past year, of the municipal bonds issued throughout the United
States, 70% were rated A, 20% were rated B, and 10% were rated C. Of the
municipal bonds rated A, 50% were issued by cities, 40% by suburbs, and
10% by rural areas. Of the municipal bonds rated B, 60% were issued by
cities, 20% by suburbs, and 20% by rural areas. Of the municipal bonds
rated C, 90% were issued by cities, 5% by suburbs, and 5% by rural areas.

a) What proportion of municipal bonds are issued by suburbs?

b) If a new municipal bond is to be issued by a city, what is the probability

that it will receive an A rating?

Problem 4. 2 pt
The on-line access computer service industry is growing at an extraordinary
rate. Current estimates suggest that 20% of people with home-based comput-
ers have access to on-line services. Suppose that 15 people with home-based
computers were randomly and independently sampled.

a) What is the probability that two of those sampled have access to on-line
services at home?

b) What is the probability that at least 1 of those sampled have access to

on-line services at home?

Problem 5. 2 pt
Flaws occur in the interior of plastic used for automobiles according to a
Poisson distribution with a mean of 0.02 flaw per panel.

a) If 50 panels are inspected, what is the probability that there are no

flaws?

b) What is the expected number of panels that need to be inspected before

a flaw is found?

c) If 50 panels are inspected, what is the probability that the number of

panels that have one or more flaws is less than or equal to 2?
