Tutorial 1

This document is a tutorial sheet for the Operations Research course at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, K. K. Birla Goa Campus, for the second semester of 2019-2020. It contains a series of problems related to reliability functions, failure rates, and expected lifetimes of devices under various statistical distributions. The problems involve concepts such as exponential and uniform distributions, Poisson processes, and system reliability calculations.

Q. 1 Let the life time of a device, T have the pdf f (t) = 1/t2 for 1 ≤ t <
∞. Determine the reliability function and the failure rate function.

Q. 2 Three components are arranged in series. Moreover, suppose that

their respective lifetimes are mutually independent with exponential
distribution having failure rates 0.003, 0.01 and 0.008. Determine
the reliability and the failure rate of the series system. What is the
mean time to failure of this system ? Evaluate R(E(T)).

Q. 3 Suppose that probability that a device will survive a shock is 2/3,

if shocks arrive at the rate of 0.6 according to Poisson distribution,
find the expected life time of the device.

Q. 4 Let arrival of shock follow Poisson Process with rate 0.15. Suppose
a device can take maximum 3 shocks. Find R(10).

Q. 5 Suppose the time to failure of a device follows Uniform distribution

on (0, 2) (in yrs). Find the conditional probability that the device
will fail in 1.05 yrs given that it worked 1 year.

Q. 6 Consider a series system of 3 independent components each of which

functions for an amount of time (in yrs) Uniformly distributed over
(0, 10). Find the expected system life.

Q. 7 Consider a series system of three independent components and the

life length of each component follows uniformly distribution over
(0, 10). (i) Find the reliability of the system. (ii) Find the expected
system life.

Q. 8 Consider a system consisting of eight components . The system

consists of five assemblies in series, where assembly 1 consists of
component 1 with reliability 0.99, assembly II consists component 2
and 3 in parallel with reliability 0.95 and 0.95, assembly III consists
component 4,5,6 in parallel with reliability 0.96, 0.92, 0.85, assembly
IV and V consist of component 7 and 8 with reliability 0.95, 0.82
respectively. calculate system reliability.

Q. 9 Probability that a device can survive after 0,1,2,3,4 or more shocks

are 1,0.8,0.4,0.2, 0 respectively. If the arrival of shocks follow Pois-
son process with λ = 0.15, find R(10).
